Guitar Center going out of business?

Guitar Center is in Serious Financial Trouble | MetalSucks

This is probably fantastic news for all of you that hate GC. I've had my fair share or horror stories from them as well. I just hope it doesn't affect Musicians Friend.

I've had a few bad experiences with GC, but mostly good. This is sad news to me, & probably bad to everyone cause if it goes down, what happens to other companies? I feel like it's gonna be a rippling effect.

It will most definitely affect MF, and Music123. Unless they get bought out by a different corporation. I'm not really sure if they have the same financial issues as GC itself, so who knows.

It will affect the gear manufacturers, and they in turn will have to lower their buy in quotas to become a dealer. This should pave the way for more mom and pop businesses in the industry. Hopefully none of the manufacturers are relying too heavily on GC (but then, I've seen this coming for the past few years (leveraging ROI is a common business practice for these types of investors), so the gear manufacturers have to have seen it coming as well).

THAT worries me a lot. I ....ing love Musiciansfriend.

Also, I loved GC's used section. I know people hate them and such, but compared to my local Craigslist and eBay, the prices are actually reasonable and I've found some damn good deals there.

Honestly I will probably only buy my gear from sweetwater from now on, but my local GC has gotten a lot of business from me because the next closest music store that doesn't suck is the House of Guitars 45 minutes from me.

But seriously, I've never had a company treat me as well as sweetwater does.

That's all I ever use GC for, they've got amazing deals on used stuff.

Yup. We'd also be stuck with Musicgoround. They're nice, but they have a flat shipping rate that gets pretty outrageous when compared to GC.

Hey bro, need help with anything? Yo' bro, I can't answer any of the questions you weren't going to ask anyway, but like my bro plaid and faux hawk? Well bro, I'll be over here if you need anything, bro.

The guitar centers in Orlando are respectable. Honestly, since they charge tax they were never the cheapest anyways. The used gear is ok, but I would rather go to craigslist.

I hate it when a department manager tries to hard sell me something, though. Staff normally look at you like you are a complete asshole for not buying whatever you are trying out, unless it is a guitar.

As a lefty, I never liked GC because their selection were sub 400 knock off epiphones that no one wants to play if they already own a guitar. It's as if left handed players buy their first guitar there, and then never again.

On the other hand they usually have some nice acoustics like l'Arrivee and Martin.

I don't really want this to happen. People always talk about wanting small music stores around them, but every music store around me that isn't GC never has anything worth seeing. GC is the only place I can go to try out gear I may want one day

i feel sorry for guitar center. i had no idea they were owned by Bain Capital. these guys buy up successful companies, make sweeping changes to cut costs and increase short term profits (but ultimately destroy the business model), suck the company dry and then discard it like a gum wrapper. it does explain a lot of the changes that have happened over the last 7 or 8 years though.

This sort of concerns me...

How will this affect me and however many other people have paid for things to be special ordered from guitar center that are not expected to arrive for several months?

This will certainly be my last order from them- I hope nothing bad happens to anyone because of this...

Doesn't guitar center owe fender and probably other companies like alot of money? Were does this put those guitar companies?

I don't think that we ever thought of it as the equivalent of music, as the end-goal was to buy more in-game slut clothes-- schecterwhore on rock band

Honestly, I would care less except for the guys/girls losing their jobs is never a cool thing.

It does mean some crazy clearance deals though, as I doubt it's feasible to send any big items back.
Maybe MF/AMS will absorb much of their stock, but I doubt it.

I'd be shocked if MF is included on this.
Selling by mail must be much more efficient from a cost perspective.

Isn't this old news? Fender and Gibson stopped shipping inventory and I believe Guitar Center owes Fender alone over $8 million?

Yeah it is- and Mesa dumped them too :P

But the new news is the article referenced in the article posted in the OP.

Also nobody likes GC so... hooray for another "the witch is no more" thread :P
