Question Hi-Gain Rhythm Pickups?

I'm getting a custom 7 string guitar made soon and I'm looking to turn it into a rhythm guitar since I already have 2 "lead" guitars. The specs are:
Mahogany Body + Maple cap
Fixed Bridge 25.5 5 piece Maple neck with Bubinga stripes
Cocobolo fretboard

I'm looking for a bridge pickup that is fat sounding but with a lot of clarity, my thoughts so far are:
Aftermath Set
Holy Diver Set
Emerald Set
Petrucci Set

Any help/other ideas? I mainly play metalcore/melodic death/technical metal
Cheers!

If there is a 7-string version of the EMG 85, my vote would go for that...

For six string, the EMG 85 is my favorite ever...

=========================================
ISP Theta Preamp, ISP Impression, ISP Theta Combo, ISP Theta PRO, Aria Diamond with EMG 85, Ibanez Semi-Hollow with EMG HA and HAX, Charvel Wild Card Pro Mod #6 Dreamsicle with EMG 57 and SAVX, Charvel SD-1 HS with EMG 57 and SAV!

Right now I'm digging the JB I have in my Les Paul, and I liked the Bill Lawrence 500XL I used to have in it.

Ill probably be trying a Dimarzio PAF7 in my all mahogany 7 string soon. The general response seems to he that its a very open and clear pickup

I'm not fond of EMGs 7 string range. I love their 6s but the 7s are very different IMO

Yeah a lot of people are recommending low output pickups for clarity since they won't mud up under distortion. Will look into them.

I can't say I like the look of LACE pickups but I'm really interested in trying out Seymour Duncan's range.

I forgot to mention these in my OP. They sound the best out of all the metal samples on the BKP site. Not to many people have firsthand experience with them though.

The 707 is more or less an 85-7.

I would vote for Full Shreds, they have a really nice throaty growl to them, very nice for rythms.

DiMarzio D-Activators or the new Bare Knuckle Blackhawks. The blackhawks certainly seem to be causing a buzz, I just saw that Misha switched out the Coldsweat and Aftermaths he had in a couple of his guitars for the Blackhawks.

Not sure if he did switch them out, but he does recommend them a lot when asked about BKP's.

It was on his facebook profile. It was a post from last Friday: "The Daemoness and Blackmachine B6 are now outfitted with Black Hawk sets. The Mayones 7 has the Aftermath set that used to be in the Daemoness and the Mayones 6 has the Coldsweat/VHII set that used to be in the Blackmachine. Every guitar is sounding better as a result. Gonna have to record some clips tomorrow!"

One of the best sounding pickups for rhythms I've used was a Pearly Gates. Sounded very crisp and articulate, though it could've been tighter.

Cheers for all the replies!! So many options

A lot of people have recommended Black Hawks for the sound I'm after but I honestly don't like how they look. I'm more of a conventional pickup guy.

I have a Painkiller in my Custom Ibanez RG565 that even made Swamp Ash sound full and chunky!

I wouldn't listen to any of them, seeing as all the people recommending them are doing so because they saw a post where Misha said he swapped what was in his guitars for them and haven't actually played them

IMO, the Tr00ch set would be too muddy for something with mahogany, so rule those out

Any examples of the exact tone you're going for?

The OP didn't make mention of the type of amp they have. So, I'll assume they have some sort of modern high gain deal.

In which case, they probably don't really need a HOT pickup or any other type of PU associated with metal. I found my Aftermath to be quite low on the output which helps with clarity, but I wouldn't call it 'thick'.

I have never understood the hot pickup phenomenon. Turn up the gain on your amp or on your boost pedal you will have better results in the tone and clarity department. for that guitar i would put in either holy divers, black dogs. I cant comment on the blackhawks because i have not used them.

if it was a bolt on i would go for the divers if it is anything else i would use the black dogs thats just my taste for mahogany. If you wanted to try some different i have heard that that the black hawks sound good in just about everything.
