NGD: Blackmachine B6. (56kill yourself)

Some of you may remember that Doug posted on the BM website that a B6 was available around Christmas time. I am the lucky dog who picked it up! I've actually been in contact with him for about four years, and been on the waiting list for quite a while, but we've just never been able to line up guitar and fund readiness . . . until Christmas, when I got a honkin' big cheque for severance from when I had lost one of my two jobs back in September. I was planning to use it to pay some debts and then maybe order a JPX or a Custom 24, but I e-mailed Doug as soon as I saw the post, and he was happy to let me have it! It was meant to be!!!

So, as is typical with Blackmachines, I had to wait a few months past the original estimated completion date, which I can't say I was too disappointed with. I'd waited so long already that a few more months was fine with me. It finally arrived from UPS yesterday, and let me tell you: when I opened the case, everyone in the room gasped. Of all the B6s I have seen on the internet, this by far has the nicest piece of wood for a body. The grain is incredibly unique and intense, and it's so smooth and it reflects the light beautifully. I was expecting it to be fairly plain, but I was just totally stunned when i saw it for the first time. And as soon as I picked it up, I knew that it was incredibly special. There's just something different about holding a guitar that was handcrafted, and put together with care by someone who is truly passionate about making their instruments perfect.

So, here are the details/specs:
-Swamp ash two-piece body
-Maple three-piece neck
-Schaller-Hannes bridge
-Sperzel locking tuners
-Bareknuckle Emerald bridge/neck combo, "Black Battle-worn"
-Rosewood pot cover, fretboard, and headstock top
-Dunlop 6100 jumbo fretwire

It plays and sounds incredible. It has a rather beefy low end, but its greatest strength is the definition it gives on chords, even ones up above the twelfth fret. The highs really stick out and don't get lost in the lower frequencies. The neck is comparable to my EBMM Silhouette: thin but round, which is great for me because I'm used to that shape. The fretboard is just slick like you wouldn't believe. This thing just shreds like mozzarella on a grater. It is very light, and very comfortable. The edges and surface are smooth, and the slight bevel where the forearm goes makes a huge difference. But I think what amazed me most about it off the bat was that I took it out of the case after it had travelled across the ocean, and then across a fair chunk of Canada, and it was still in tune. Anyway, that's all I can think of off the top of my head, if anyone has questions just ask. But I must say, this thing exceeded my expectations. I have played a couple of B2s before, and this puppy really holds it own against them. It's not so much a "lesser B2" as it is a totally different guitar. Worth every penny; believe the hype.

Picture time!!!

Nice! Looks stunning as expected! That's definitely THE nicest B6 I've seen to date.

Something that has always bothered me about pictures of BMs on the internet is that there are so few that can really give you a perspective of how thin they really are (I believe this one is about 34mm). So here is a bunch of comparison pictures of the B6 next to some everyday objects!

As usual with Blackmachine, simple but absolutely beautiful. The bodies feel so thin and comfortable.

Price depends on a few factors, I think. I payed a little more than others I have heard of, probably because of the hardware and the excessively nice wood. About 2000 for me. The price tag on BMs is constantly on the rise because of the demand, and because every guitar he makes is better than the last.

Congrats, especially after the wait I just read about. Have to say my favorite aspect is the fret wood to headstock continuation, classy.

Thanks guys!

My only grievance thus far is that, while it still plays really great, the strings are much higher than what I'm used to on my EBMMs, which all have the strings SUPER low. I kind of expected the B6 to come with the strings basically glued to the fretboard, but was surprised to find them quite high.

I need to give it a couple days in my climate, and then I'll have a go at getting it set up in less awkward way for my fingers. I spoke with Nolly about it and he said that Doug generally sets them up so that all you need is a quick truss-rod adjustment to get it perfect. Let's hope!
