Old Hofner 8-string!?

Found this. Thought I'd share it here.

Never knew Hofner made an 8. Says it may be a one off/proto from around the 80's/90's. Only $1200, too! If I had the cash I might have gone for it.

Holy .... that's nice. I'd be all over that if it had proper pickups. Seems like it'd be sweet for jazz.

One of those sold on eBay for $700-$800 within the last year here... I was watching it, but didn't want to have to cut a bridge pickup hole myself.

Oh dear, very classy looking indeed: agreed:
Höfner actually made quite a few special instruments over the times, and don't write off the stock pickup; they made some very good sounding pickups.

I agree this would likely be great for jazz.
From the looks, I'd say 25.5" scale. Pity the lower cutaway wasn't done deeper..
Oh, and it's got a modern sexy no-heel neck/body transition too..

Now, tune this thing B1...A4 or A1...G4 (as I do with my Riot), and it could be really sweet.
I'm getting horny

Do note the double jacks! The neck pickup is six strings, and it has an additional bass pickup about halfways for the lower two strings; hense the two jacks.
Clearly intended for jazzy chops, playing melody on the upper six strings and bass lines on the lower two.

Being quite special, maybe not an instrument to mod-mess with, but then again, maybe it won't ever reach a high-price status, so..

If it was me, I would simply add piezo's to the bridge saddles, rewire the controls for separate pickup and piezo controls, and have me a nice classy jazzy thingy, which could be restored with no damages done.

i think you mean a lap steel and yes it does seem reminiscent of a lap steel but its not one if that's what you were thinking. i would be very much interested in the history of this guitar.
