Buckeye burl carved top build: vixen #5

Just started this one today and it will be coming up for sale when it is finished, so I thought I would document the build process for anyone potentially interested. This one is my "Vixen" body style, and will have a one piece carved buckeye burl top with a chambered walnut body, walnut neck, 24 fret rosewood board, a curly walnut neck, and curly maple binding all around. I am planning to use antiqued copper hardware like this Peters Instruments| the vixen and make the pickup rings and knobs from rosewood. have made any decision on pickups or electronics just yet. This will be available once completed, but anyone who is interested in the finished product can reserve it now at a discount, and can make design changes. The sooner its reserved and the less work thats already complete the more customizable it can be. Could be a six or seven string at this point. Comments and questions are welcome.

I havent been able to work on this a ton, but I did get the top glued to the body today, and I trimmed it to size.

That is the best buckeye burl top I've ever seen. The only I've ever actually liked, for that matter. It usually looks too cluttered and busy to me, but I really dig how you put this one there, making emphasis on the contrast between the two main colors. Workmanship looks absolutely superb. I want to see this finished!

Sum ergo cogito; cogito ergo dubito; dubito ergo cogito; cogito ergo sum.

thanks guys, this one is not a huge priority right now, but I am nonetheless really excited to see it finished. I think that the copper hardware is going to look sick with the buckeye top.

today I roughed in the recurve and started refining the carve on the top. I also did the round over on the back side and installed the curly maple binding.

I think the original is only 1600 x1200. i keep my camera one the smallest setting so the photos dont take up so much space... but if you want I can still send it to you though.

got some photos of the guitar with the binding installed today. I wet it down once just so I could get an idea of what the top will look like.... this thing is going be sick.

It will take a couple applications like this to get all the voids and bark inclusions filled in

vixen#5 by Peters Instruments, on Flickr

Here is the piece of curly walnut that I'll use for the neck.

I got a little more done on the neck on friday, the head stock veneers are all glued on, the head stock is shaped, the neck width is tapered, and the I installed the curly maple binding on the head stock. I am trying to decide what type of taper for the neck. I am partial to a chunkier neck myself what do you guys think?

Today I put on a few coats of oil, and started routing out the neck pocket. I ran into a little snag so I'll have to finish up the neck route on wednesday.

here it is after some oil.

To be completely honest I had no idea that my headstock resembled a schecter till you said something, I'm not very familiar with their guitars... I still like my headstock though

Trust me - nothing about this guitar is even close to Schecter

Absolutely gorgeous wood, and amazing craftsmanship to boot. I cant wait to see the finished result!
