there's too many, sorry.

Usually the older melodeath strikes me better, but some modern stuff is killer too. Allegaeon, Arise in Stability, Arsis, Canopy, Chaos Divine, Codeon, Divinity, Enthrope, Eradication, Eternal Tears Of Sorrow, Eventide, In Mourning(later albums), Insomnium, Massive Slavery, Mors Principium Est, Omnium Gatherum (latest album), Quo Vadis, Shade Empire, Soul Cycle, The Arcane Order, The Fading, Unspoken Triumph

some stuff that is and/or sounds older:
Autumn Leaves, Chastisement, Garden of Shadows, Godgory, In Thy Dreams, Sacrilege, Unanimated

at least I tried leaving the best-known bands alone *shrugs*

Sadly Gothenburg stuff isn't my exact cup of tea, which is weird because I love bands that incorporate lots of melody like Neuraxis, Anata and Decrepit Birth.

There's just something "off" and not appealing to a lot of the melodies they use.

If there's anyone that could recommend some entry level stuff based on that fact that I hate generic melodeath that'd be just swell and dandy.

I wanted to make a thread similar to this after seeing that In Flames thread.

for sure check out Allegaeon, amon amarth, insomnium, the absence, dark tranquility, arsis, norther, scar symmetry, and solution .45. you might like those better. dark tranquility are from where in flames are from, but sound different because of the use of keyboard and synth

Allegaeon: Pokerface.
Amon Amarth: Pokerface.
Insomnium: Pretty cool actually. Meaty ....in riffs
Dark Tranquillity: Verse riff was sort of cool, but chorus got too Gothenburg for me. Shadow In Our Blood btw.
The Absence: This is ihave27fret's band, right? Pretty good for unearthcore.
Arsis: I'd call Arsis techdeath (my forte) before melodeath.
Norther: NOOOPE.
Scar Symmetry: Same deal with everyone else. I just don't gel with this sound.
Solution .45: Naw.

Sorry dude, while I'll say I respect each band's musicmanship, I'm too ruined by my taste for pissed and cathartic techdeath and osdm. This stuff is too clean for me.
I'll go lope back to my techdeath cave now.

I assume I shall have to erect an almighty flame shield now, but my favourite melodeath album of all is:

Follow the Reaper by Children of Bodom.

Seriously.

It's really a classic of the genre - melodic, catchy but still just about extreme enough to bring a smile to the face of a death metaller, well-written, musically superb, and while it's long before they sold out and started getting worse, you can still hear a lot of "their" sound in it. It's an amazing album.

Won't hear a word said against it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't have a 7-string any more and I like fat necks and single-coils, come at me.

After reading this thread, I'm convinced that either Christian Alvestam or Bjorn Strid are in every melodeath band ever.

Someone should make a band and have those two as vocalists. That will clearly be the singularity.

Also look three posts down

If you don't like the gothenburg-melodies (the bit blackened stuff I guess?).. then I just can't see why you would like to get into melodeath at all. You started with at the gates, right? The first two Soilwork albums could be your cup of tea although somewhat pokerface? One I forgot from my earlier post, Templestowe, is neat as well. The Arcane Order? Even more thrashy like The Haunted?

Thought at the gates was given.. Listening to melodeath but not at the gates sounds quite an impossible equation to me.

Good call on Universum, they're very solid.

Also, anyone count Swallow The Sun as melodeath? If not okay, at least I meantioned them ;D

It's impossible for me to hate that album, though I prefer Hatebreeder!

It took long enough for a Wintersun song to get posted I thought they were the most popular band in the genre!
