Lace Aluma-Djent pickups

Pickups for 8, 9 and 10 string guitars are now available from Lace. They are based on the custom Tone Bars that are in Tosin's Strandberg and Celticelk's O.A.F 8 string. They should be hitting their website in the next couple of weeks. If you're thinking of ditching your actives in your current axe or having a custom guitar built definitely consider trying out a set of these. They fit standard EMG routs and are in my opinion the best ERG pickup available.
Please contact me through my yahoo email (oafstore@yahoo.com) if you are interested in ordering a pair.

O.A.F. uses Fast Guitars OEM services, Best Guitar Parts OEM services, pickups by Instrumental Pickups, Dimarzio, Lace, BKP and Nordstrand, Hardware by Hipshot Products, SKB cases and lot's of products from ALLPARTS, WDMusic, eBay and Amazon!! In the spirit of FULL DISCLOSURE I had Kelloggs Raisin Bran Crunch this morning for breakfast and am wearing Cabela boots while I'm typing this.

Are they seriously called Aluma-Djent?

This has gone too far.

I know, I had to read the email twice. I think it's actually really cool that Lace named it that way. How many other pickup companies would do that?

Despite the name it is a very versatile pickup that really allows the natural tone of the guitar to shine through. I can see this pickup being used for pretty much any style of music.

I'm going to buy them. I'm just going to have to refer to them as "the ones Tosin uses" to avoid embarrassment.

Out of curiosity, do you know if they'll do any custom anodizing?

No seven string version? I had heard that Lace was working on some pickups for sevens.

I don't know off hand if they do any custom anodizing but I'll shoot an email to them. What color are you thinking?

As far as seven string pickups go I think they are doing them as well. The pickups that I put in Celticelk's guitar are the 3.5" frames which would be pretty close the EMG 707 in size but the magnets cover alot more space than the EMG pickups so they work fine.

The funny thing about the name is, aren't the ones Tosin is using based on the Aluma 90s Not really "djenty"

PS I agree it would be freaking awesome if you can get these custom anodized... or even if they could ship them raw so you could send them out for anodizing

Nothing too crazy - I just had come up with this mockup of a Strandberg that should be finished up around next July, and kind grew to really like the idea of the darker red anodized grooves in the pickups.

I love Alumitone pickups, but the djent thing really turns me off.

Not enough to not buy them, though. No sevens though? Really? I'd buy some right now for my Loomis.

Wait, am I actually on the cutting edge of a trend? That never happens! =) I suppose everyone will be racing to get domestic-sourced wood guitars next...except Tosin's doing that with his Toone build, so maybe everyone actually will....

That is kind of odd they aren't making any for 7s if it is a djentbucker

The Loomis has EMG 707s, right? Check the housing size - I'm fairly confident that the Lace BassBar 3.5 is the same size, and that's the size of the pickup I've got in my OAF 8. My guess is that these will be Tosin's Aluma-90 modified ToneBar in the current BassBar-sized housings and billed as 8/9/10 string pickups respectively. So that "Aluma-Djent" 8 could very well be a drop-in replacement for the 707. I think. Maybe. Don't quote me on that. =)

OTOH, Fred's 7-string Strandberg has a standard-sized Aluma-90, which actually works for 7 strings due to its width. Maybe Lace is counting on selling those to builders who want pickups for 7s.

Tom has my guitar for minor adjustments at the moment, so I can't help you out just yet. Check out any of Tosin's YouTube videos where he's playing one of his Strandbergs. The guitar-and-vocal video of "Behaving Badly" exposes the clean tone of the pickup really well.

I have messaged Lace regarding the spacing and sizing of the pickups as well as anodizing options. I am nearly certain it is the 3.5, 4 and 4.5 bass bar frames with the p90 winding and that of course means you could use the 3.5 to replace a 707, a 4" to replace the 808 and the 4.5" to replace a dc45. The wider magnets of course give you more span than the EMG's by a lot. EMG's span out at 2.75", 3.2" and 3.75" for the 35, 40 and 45 series pickups where the Lace's can use the full length of the pickup. Cool thing about the Lace pickups is that the 4.5 will work on up to 11 strings at standard 10.5mm spacing. I am doing some preliminary sketches to see how much they can be angled for multiscale applications.

Heard back from Lace, 3.5" is for 8 string, 4" for the 9 strings and of course 4.5" for the 10 strings. I read somewhere on ss.org that at least one person has used the Tone Bars to replace EMG's and Agile's cepheus pickups without modifying the rout so I am guessing that the 3.5" would work fine for the EMG707 but I haven't done this personally.

As far as actual magnet lengths on these pickups the 3.5" model hosts a 3" magnet. I assume that the others are similar enough in design that you could subtract .5" from the overall measurement of the frame to estimate the effective max string spread.

Lace doesn't offer custom anodizing services.

Any color options? They may not do custom anodizing, but are they like available in the standard black - silver - gold like their original Alumitone Humbuckers?

If gold is available, I may think of grabbing these for a custom I'm about to get built.
