Traynor YCV80

I have three solid state amps...I would like to get rid of two of them and get a tube amp. I played the Traynor at a local store on a low volume and I liked it. Does anybody have any information (other than it specs which I know) that could help me decide whether or not to buy this or look into something else. My budget is also tight and this was enticing for its price.

Thanks all

Eric

The Custom Valve 80 is vintage Traynor with black vinyl covering and chrome-plated corners, all plywood construction, and a classic front-mounted Traynor logo. The rear mounted control panel is easy to access, yet recessed for protection.

Traynor Custom Valve guitar amplifiers are distributed exclusively in the USA and Canada by Yorkville Sound and are covered under Yorkville's standard two year (even if you break it!) transferable warranty.* The same warranty that Traynor was famous for in the sixties.

(*Warranty valid in U.S. and Canada only.)

Enter the YCV80 Series!!
The 2 x 12” Traynor Custom Valve 80 and the 4 x 10” Custom Valve 80Q (that’s “Q” for Quad) pack a one-two knockout punch in the heavyweight division of all-tube combo guitar amplifiers.

Designed from the ground up, these amplifiers come with cool new features from clean “acoustic-like” sounds to the heaviest “scooped” lead tone you would expect from one of those outrageously expensive “boutique” amps.

Other features include DynaSound speaker emulation for direct line output along with parallel and series effects loops.

Simple, Versatile, Great Tone

Designed by musicians for musicians, Traynor Custom Valve 80 amplifiers are built for versatility but are simple to operate. It’s always easy to get a great tone from clean to crunch to overdrive!

Here’s the Scoop

New features include two new tone-shaping controls that give you unprecedented tonal variety for any vintage tube tone imaginable. A ‘Scoop’ switch on the lead channel adds body for much heavier, crunchier leads while the ‘Expander’ switch on the clean amazing new rhythm sounds often simulating an acoustic-like tone from an electric guitar…
I usually find that "vintage tube tone" = I'd also like to know exactly what the 'expander' does - if it's just another term for "extremely jacked up compression that you can't adjust" I'd steer away.

The thing about tube combos is that (in my experience) they just suck when the volume's low, and the only way to really get the one out of them is to crank 'em up. Which is fine, unless it's 9PM on a Wednesday night and you just feel like some relaxing noodling around before bed.

I'm hitting guitar center this weekend (again) to look for that natural finish Schecter 7. If they have one there I'll give it a spin.

Only other thing I can think to add here is that you'd be better off trading in all of your amps on one highend amp rather than fiddling with 2 SS's and a tube job. Have you played a Johnson Millennium? It's basely a solid state amp, but does have tubes in it that you can dial up for patches if you care to. It'll never get you the tube sound, but the amp itself is pretty fuckin' nasty and has the Digitech S-Disc built in (it's basically a GSP2112 in a combo).

Yea, I've read all the reviews on Harmony Central and many other sites. You should hear this amp with a seven string...even the overdrive is pretty killer. But I wanted to know if any other seven string players had any experience, cause many of the people on Harmony central are so egotistical that their reviews are meaningless.

But, I have a Hughes and Kettner Warp 7 that I got for 200 bucks BRAND NEW. It's not the geatest sounding amp, but when I'm mic'ed in a club or something, the tone is pretty good, and it is fucking loud. I really wanted a tube amp, and i'll still have my kettner for those wednesday jam sessions in my room. The expander makes the clean very full sounding...almost like switching to your neck pickup in a way...with some chorus and delay, it fucking rocked. I plugged in some metal pedals and it can handle it well.

Im going to get it I think...my music store sells them brand new for 549.95 and I can sell one of my amps for 400 now, and cover the 149.95 balance. If I don't like it in a year, I'll sell it, but for now it really does compare to some good fenders and marshall tubes.
