What do you guys think?

Hi guys. I just found these forums, and thought this would be a great place to get a little info. I am currently getting ready to order my first 7 string. I currently own an Ibanez RG760, and an EBMM JP6. I have been playing for many years and demand quality in my instruments. Anyway, because this is my first 7 String, I really don't want to fork out a load of cash for a Petrucci 7, in the event that things don't work out. So, I have decided to go for the Ibanez RG1527, in the Royal Blue finish. Before making this purchase, I have a few questions that I hope maybe some of the more experienced 7-string players here could answer.

1. Are these well-crafted guitars? I bought my RG760 back in 91, and that guitar is still with me today. I love the feel of the necks and the craftsmenship on the early 90's model Ibanez guitars. When I was looking for a new six string last year, I was not as impressed with many of the newer model Ibanez guitars that I tried. The necks seemed fatter, and they just didn't seem to feel as good. So, how will the RG1527 stand up against my RG760? More importantly, my hands are accustomed to the ultra-thin necks on the earlier models. Is the neck on the 1527 comparable to the neck on my RG760?

2. I really love the color of this guitar. I noticed in a few pics that they almost seem to have a sparkle type of finish. Can someone confirm this for me. My purchase doesn't depend on it, but It would be real cool to have a guitar with a sprkle finish

3. All of my guitars have had the pickups changed. How are the stock pickups that come in the RG1527? I know I will eventually end up going with a Air Norton 7, and a Blaze, but If I could get by for a few months with the stock pickups that come with the guitar, that would be tremendous.

Steve777

P.S. Thank you in advance to anyone kind enough to assist me with these questions.

1.) It's a stand up guitar I reckon. The neck will be different to the older Ibanez necks because the newer RG necks are un-finished. It feels soooo good with that bare wood-ish feel. I'm not sure about feel though, sorry, haven't play any older Ibanez necks yet. This neck is extremely comfortable for me though, it compares well to the RG350EX neck. IMO

2.) It does have a sparkle finish, you can't see it in some light though. When I have had mine outside it almost looks aqua (sp?), at least in photo's I've taken. Then inside it can look almost black (my avatar) lol.

3.) The stock pup's aren't that bad compared to most Ibanez stock pup's. I've had my 1527 for 6 months now and I've hung in there quite well with them, so they are acceptable.

EDIT: Welcome to SS!

RIP MIKE

Thank you for the warm welcome, mawdyson. Your post was very helpful and informative. Actually, I am really excited to hear that it is an unfinished neck. My Ernie Ball Petrucci has an unfinished neck, and I really love the feel. My only concern was that the neck has the nice thin radius that my hands have become accustomed too. It's funny, I still have my Strat that I got back in 86' and since I have become so accustomed to playing Ibanez, the neck on my Strat always feels weird to me whenver I break it out. Anyway, thank you. I really appreciate it!

Welcome.

I do not own a 1527 but I played one recently and I liked it. The neck seemed different than the necks on my 7620s and S 7420, my UV's neck is a little different as well with the non all access neck joint, still, I liked the feel of the 1527, it's a nice guitar, I like the color alot too......I could've bought it but I decided not to.

howdy!

the RG7 neck is a bit thicker than the RG Wizard II, but you'll have that with 7 strings. if you want to try cheaper than a new RG7, see if you can find a used RG7620.

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

The Ibanez 7 string necks are the thinnest necks you can get for a 7... The thinnest ones are the early 90's UV's. (UV7BK, UV777GR & UV777PWH).

Hi there I own a 1527 & its easily the best 7 i own, it's built well the colour's great the neck's awesome & so is the trem, it's very responsive( but you'll need to change the springs to some heavy duty springs) as for the pickups, they're ok but nothin' special so you'll definitely need to change em.

Thank you for the warm welcomes. I really appreciate all the helpful info! Yeah, I figured with it being a 7 string, that the neck would be a bit thicker. That's no problem. I just don't want to feel like I'm trying to wrap my fingers around a tree trunk.

I have been reading through some back posts, and checking out some pics, and I really think that the 1527 is the most logical choice for me.

Angryman, I hear you. I am positive that I will be changing the pickups!

You will love the Ibanez neck. No worries there. You might want to look into the "tremolno" product (www.tremolno.com), which I can't wait to install in all my Ibanez 7s. As for the pickups, theyre not bad but they lack the 3d quality genuine DiMarzios have.
