Mmm... Drop A is fun! ^_^

After being completely engrossed in my new J Custom for the past while, I thought it was time I whipped out a 7 again and started putting out some aural pain.

So out comes my Stealth 7, which seems to be changing tunings as often as I changed my underpants, often going from B to Bb to A whenever I feel like it, the odd time a number of times a day. I never went for drop tunings before, but I had been playing around a lot with drop D after I started learning some Opeth songs that were tuned that way. When I whipped out my Stealth, I thought, hey why not try drop A?

Christ it sounds immense! Being able to go from nice open chords straight to some insanely heavy powerchords. Opeth's The Grand Conjuration transposed to A is a real treat for the ears, I can tell you!

Yep, Drop A is awesome. It works REALLY well for jazzier chords & 6-string powerchords as well. That's been my tuning for a couple of years now. And nice Stealth too! Visions of Chuck Shuldiner fill my head.

Presicely the man who inspired the choice of guitar shape, and headstock.

^ If that's the case, tune the top 6 to Death-approved D tuning with a Drop G.

Well now that's something to consider! Although I think the lowest string might turn to an elestic band downtuned that much.

Jim Soloway is a jewel in the rough
Drop A is pretty much the standard tuning among jazz players and the tuning I've used since I first started playing 7-string. It was George Van Eps original tuning when he first started playing 7-string in the late 30's. When he much older, he want to D-tuning with a drop G. It may be "death-approved" but it's also a gloriously huge jazz tuning.

^ Agreed, Jim. Although Drop A goes well with my metal playing, I started using that tuning for jazz BECAUSE of George Van Eps. While chording the higher strings, I use the Dropped A string for walking bass lines.

lol, that's one of the reasons I got a 7 string in the first place was because I could play dropped stuff and standard stuff on the same axe :p

And yes, Drop-A is awesome \m/
