Considering an Epiphone 7 string

Hey everyone:

I'm a long time lurker, and thought I'd finally step up and post. Through my searching, it looks like there is a mixed bag of reviews on the Epiphone LP 7. But I am gonna ask for advice in hopes that perhaps there is some helpful feedback.

I know a guy who wants to sell his and I'm considering buying it. Its in transparent lack (which I like). I'll be using it as a rhythm guitar as I don't really shred or anything like that. I currently use a Gibson LP Standard so I am used to bigger necks. I know the pickups would need to be changed, so I'd need some advice there too. I currently use SD 59/JB in my LP and 490/498 in my Epi Dot.

Any thoughts? What's a good price for one in good condition with a gig bag? Also, its gonna need to be shipped, so I won't get to play it first. Any known problem areas I should ask about?

Go to the store and play a few Epiphone Les Paul Standards. Imagine that with an extra string, and that is what you'd be getting. Not too bad, but nothing spectacular.

Expect to replace the tuners and pickups at a minimum.

I had an Epi LP 7-string for about 2 years. The pups are allright, but they can be muddy in the lower registers. A change is recommended & that JB/59 sounds perfect for it. The neck is true to Les Pauls...FAT! But, if want that LP sound, this is it. Action was great. I would not look at this guitar as a shredder machine. Rather, it's a great riffing machine.

I would watch the prics on Ebay. I believe they hit in the $300-500 range.

cool, thanks guys! yeah, I'm looking for just a good riffing and rhythm guitar. The music I play doesn'r lend itself to shred and I love the feel and sound of a Les Paul. Sounds like I should give it a shot! They fit in regular les paul cases right? Shouldn't be any problems with the wider neck?

I prefer the JB/Jazz combo myself. The slight midrange scoop and extra gain really help control that upper register, wound string mud.

hmm.. can you tell me a bit about the Jazz? Is it less bass heavy? How is the output compared to a 59?
