Probably an extremely dumb question...
...but I'm completely new to 7's so I'm gonna ask it anyway. How well do most smaller (1x12) combos handle the bottom end of a 7-string? Does it need more breathing room to sound good? I've downsized my gear (other than my guitars) significantly in recent months to what I actually need for what I do and am currently down to just a modded (hasserlized) Carvin V16. For those unfamiliar, that's a 5w/16w tube amp with a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker. I'm using a Tonebone Plexitube for additional gain when I want it. Is it likely to be muddy or disappointing through that setup? I don't need loud (that little bugger is surprisingly loud for playing at home anyway) but I do want it to sound good.

I think a couple guys on here use 1x12s. Personally, I prefer a solid 2x12 for bedroom jamming. To me, it just sounds better.

When playing my 7 thru my Mesa 1x12, I find it sounds adequate for practice, but I wouldn't gig with it. I use a vertical 2x12 and prop the combo up on that for extra -everything-. It just sounds better overrall. A 1x12 can definetly handle a 7, but an ext. cab added on, be it even a 1x12, 2x12 etc, will sound better indefinetly.

It depends on "what you want to do". I practice through a '70s Fender Musicmaster bass amp which is similar in configuration to the Carvin you use(without all that gain), ands even through a bass amp, I can't get much chug. I would say if you are playing some loud, distorted, irreverent music out in a fair size club, try close micing it and emphasize only the missing "grunt" frequencies.

will it handel it? yes, will it sound good? yes... but it won't move as much air so it would be hard to keep up with 4x12s. on the other hand, the mesa f-50 1x12 widebody i was using for a while did a great job of goin up against half stacks, 100w ones mind you.

Remember that this is a 15 watt amp. It will run out of juice rapidly. Not like a 50 or 100 watt. Power is important!

Thanks folks. We're talking strictly living room playing here though. I'm not gigging, I'm a hack (but I have fun).

My RG75 sounds brutal in drop-A, you won't have any problems. Remember you get tons more sound/bass if you put it in the corner or against a wall, if you're worried you can do that and turn down the bass. a drop-a bs clip just to show what it sounds like

Peavey Studio Pro - it's great. I actually like the way it plays more than my head/cab setup. Too bad the volume isn't there. It's only an issue if you have to 'beat down' a drummer. Har har.
