S7420's Rock!

Last night was my first band practice with the S7420. Would've had one sooner, but recording and illness got in the way.

I am seriously impressed! This guitar has a much darker sound than my RG7321 but cuts through the mix nicely. The light weight body and the contouring make it a good guitar for bouncing about with. It just hugs itself to you, with no hard edges to dig into your arms like my RG7321 has. The neck feels fast and smooth with a similar profile to an RG7620.

My only gripes with it are that the strings are dead (but then it did take a month for it to get to me from the US) and aren't my gauge, and the bridge needs blocking as I don't get on with trems on 7 strings. Dunno why, I have no problems with 6's, but I've just never been able to return a trem to neutral on a 7. So until the Tremol-no is out, the trem's gonna be blocked.

So basically my only problems are set up issues which are personal taste! It's being dropped off tonight to be setup (I'm crap at intonating Flyods), then it'll be all systems go.

I had been thinking of either contouring my RG7321 a bit more so it matches my RG7621 (the MIJ models have better contouring) or getting an alder body made for it that has the RG7621 contouring. Now I'm thinking I might get a fixed bridge S body made to suit the RG7321 neck and hardware. I might even put a flame veneer top on it.

Cool, yeah, the S 7420 is a great performing axe. When I first got mine in 2003, I used it live at some shows and the TRS was pretty cool and the guitar stayed in tune, I love the way it sounds too. I still use it live only for some songs. It's a great sounding guitar IMO, I like the stock pickups alot. At first, I wanted to sell it only because when I got my PWH, I found little use for it, but now, I've decided it's a great guitar, Im keeping it, I love it!

I love my S7, and it's the only 7-string I'm currently recording with. The sound is amazing on those things.

Saying that, however, live I still prefer the RG7620. The neck on the 7620 is just a little bit thinner and plays better, so live I get less wrist & hand pain.
