So what got you into 7s?

Sorry if this thread has been posted a million times, but I'm somewhat new here, so why not.

For me it was John Petrucci and Vai originally. Then Jeff Loomis, Chris Broderick and Dave Weiner's Riff of the Week vids. Of course there were more, but those were the main ones. I guess when I was younger I associated a 7 with chuggery (I know, uber-fail) but now it's my main axe. I only got my first 7 in April 2008 followed by my current one this January and I gotta say, I love em.

Loomis

The whole image is that eternal suffering awaits anyone who questions God's infinite love. That's the message we're brought up with, isn't it? Believe or die! Thank you, forgiving Lord, for all those options.

My mother is a classical musician, she plays the oboe d'amore...

That's an oboe a minor third lower than the standard instrument...

So I always enjoyed instruments which could play lower...

Eventually I heard Steve Vai for the first time performing on a 7 a very long time ago, I was a teen....

That was it... No return to the 6 string anymore for me

So the very first 7 string guitar I ever bought was the crazy multicoloured Steve Vai Ibanez univers

My mom and her oboes:-)

Nile and myself
I started thinking about getting a 7, so i could play all my thrash/maiden stuff in E, then use the b/a for the low stuff. I was a bit iffy on whether or not i could actually use notes that low effectively until I heard Nile, and then I became dead set on a 7, now I just need to find the right one.

Well, in my mind it adds up to "more notes, more music". It just made sense to me getting that extra string. It has really opened up my mind regarding scales, arpeggios and so on

I wanted to be able to play the modern downtuned stuff and all of my favorite standard-tuning stuff on one guitar.

i picked up a 7 because i like an E standard tuning with a low B, wasn't really into the F# on the second string for 6's, liked the 6 string as is, but loved the low B, so i went 7

no one really influenced me to pick up the 7, just like to play standard tuned songs, and low tuned death metal

In my early teens (About when i was 11-13) i was going to start off playing guitar with an Ibanez K7 thanks to my fanboi-ish cult towards KORN in that well, but Nooooo... my mom said it would be too much for me since it was my first guitar . She was probably right but...imagine where would i be if that was my first guitar...

And coincidentially, 4 years later, i find a dude selling one (which is extremely weird because in my country they don't sell 7 strings...Hell! i have to order string sets online!! because they don't sell them here aswell). I guess it was just destiny

long ago WAY before i started playing anything, it was because i thought 7's were different

nowadays, it's more an urge to simplify my gear collection, having 4 guitars sitting around when i only play one of them regularly isn't nearly as convenient as cutting it down to 1 or 2 guitars that i play all the time

I've known about 7s for most of the time played guitar, but I didn't get to play one until I bought one. I don't think there was any bands I bought mine because of. I think I just wanted to try something different and 7 strings seemed like a cool idea, and I already had some nice six strings so I went for it.

Would you believe my first seven was an M207 as well! I can't really think of anyone in particular, although I was already a big fan of Nevermore, Vai, Dream Theater and Morbid Angel. I was just curious about the instruments, having looked at the aforementioned guitar hanging in the window of my local music shop for ages, and when I tried it I was hooked immediately and ended up going home with it!

Needing more range. No player really inspired me to pick up the 7... I wish I had picked up one 15 years ago though.

I heard "Enemies of Reality" was completely blowen away and decided to try one.
Wouldn't you know it my first was an M-207 as well.
I took to it right away.
Now I play pretty much everything on my 7's.

My brother started wanting a 7 because he was always that kind of player, he never really liked widdly-widdly stuff. We went to PMT and I played an Ibanez RG7321, which he later bought.

I don't think anyone really inspired me to get into 7 strings, it was just a logical step.

Though if anyone, it was probably Dino Cazares.

I wanted a 7 years ago, and my guitar teacher said "finish learning six first" - it was solid advice.

I finally got aroudn to this community and having some money (kinda), and got my first 7 in january 08 - about a year or two later then I would have liked hehe.

The reason I wanted a 7 was because I like hearing low notes.. but i dont want to downtune my les paul to do it (especially when playing covers in a highschool band).

that said, my LP is in C right now
