The MIDI triggers are piezo pickup elements embedded in the bridge saddles. Basically just like an Ibanez Double Edge, a EBMM John Petrucci, or any other piezo-equipped electric bridge. Only, instead of going to a regular pre-amp, the individual piezo saddles are routed to a master MIDI control system.

Basically yep. But there are ways to work around this (for instance, have the low E and low B share one of the channels, or maybe the high e and low B).
