Some bass players are really into wide fanned frets spanning 5-6", but it changes the way you play.I am trying find out how far plain steel strings will go before resorting to fanning the fretboard.A440 is now a real string at 25.5".
I have brand new .006 and .005 wire I am testing as well as .004 and .003.
All tune to A4,but I don't know if they will make any note higher than B-4.Shortening the scale by 2" helps somewhat, but d5 is a push.

What would be the right scale length for the E1 side? 28.625"? If so, what gauge would be appropriate for the E1?
I want a single course tuning 10 string guitar without a fan if possible. If it is necessary to fan it, I'm ok with it.
Fanning has taken to .75" increments on basses, one string to the next though there really are no rules when it comes to things like this. Most important factor would be that the angle of the fan follows the ergonomics of hand position as you near the nut - as it seems it will be custom it's just as well the choice be personal.

If you are considering the 40 Hz E on the bottom, might I suggest 30.5" as on Fender's Bass VI/Mustang basses.

You're saying a string that tiny don't break under all that tension? Can you do bends on them at all? Seems to me that you'd just have to look at it funny & it'd snap!

Hiya! Long time, no hear! If you don't remember me, you asked me a couple of years back to help with a baritone guitar design. I was playing a Steinberger down in Bb with a band called Byaxis at the time. By the way, I'm loving that kick ass Knuckle bass Bloody is playing now. Too big for my hands, but great job nonetheless!

Actually Garry's strings are not under very much tension 'cause they're so thin. I've got a one of Garry's .005's tuned to high A on my Universe right now and I can easily bend up a whole step. I'd highly recommend trying them for yourself to see how playable they are.

Not at all
the .005 is easier on the fingers than any of the unwound strings in a .009 gage set

Man, that's nuts! I just went to Garry's site and didn't see an area where he was selling these strings. Call it curiousity. For me, I still think I'd tune lower before I went higher.

Just PM Garry if you're still interested in the strings
- lots of fun if you've got more than one 7-string to play with.

!
People complain on other forums that I repeat myself, and this is why.I've posted that at first the stock .003,.004,.005, .006 and .007s would break just by looking at them. Then I've posted numerous times I've been developing wire that is stronger than these stock wires. For instance,I've gone through about 12 .005 wires to get to the newest version.I'll put my .005 up against most .008's on the market as far as durability. This is all based on the bass guitar scale lengths. I've been posting that I use a .003 as the highest string on my Adler 12-string for over a year. That's at 32''.

I am not a string company.I am letting a select number of interested guitarists who desire a high A4 string try the strings. Once I can get a number of them to tell me I am on the right track, the wire will be sent to a string company and most likely sold through them.I hand wind the ball ends on the strings now because string winders don't deal well with .005 and .004 wire.

A cheese slicer is an .006 wire or an .007 wire tuned to A4 or even G#4 between 25-30". My strings are flexible.

My website isn't for retail sales. If you tell me what you are looking for,I can see if I have strings that will work.

Oh, I remember.....

I tried to get your attention a month or two back in a thread we both contributed to - you left before me methinks.

Bloody's wheels are spinning on his second Quake. He wants the old school design which at this point would be a custom piece - t'was bad news given his reaction. I'll cut bubba a break though - he's helped me tons.

That bari is finally going to see the light of day, but will have to wait until after Winter NAMM. I have three new bass designs to execute between now and then, one of which may be turning into a fanned fret 8 string. We'll see...
