lowdown is on a distinguished road
Question Is a 7string ok for a beginner?

hey

i have been playing the piano for some time now and would like to learn guitar. big influences are alot of 7 string metal bands (deftones, korn) so it seems logical to get a 7 string first up.

can anyone tell me if learning on a 7string will be more difficult than a 6? if so what dangers do i face?

much appreciated

No dangers whatsoever. Neck is a tad wider, but unless you've got measly girly-man hands, that's not a problem. Even if you do, you'll get over it. My first electric guitar was a 7-string too, and I had no problems whatsoever.
The only little thing might be that you've got one additional string to mute when playing the higher strings, but that's something you get over really quick as your skill increases.

Plus as a piano player, your hands are probably already conditioned to do the stretches necessary to play the larger neck...

I posted this somewhere else, but think of this...

Shawn Lane = insanely great guitar player who played piano
Tony MacAlpine = insanely great guitar player who played piano
Jeff Watson = insanely great guitar player who played piano...

You get the picture.

Thats great! I wish I had started on a 7 myself. I think it would have been better. I think you can really see the benefit of starting on a 7 when you see these silly six stringers try to play there patterns and licks on a 7 and they just screw it all up because they have an ingrained 6 string mindset. It also gives you the early benefit of viewing the instrument as a whole and not a 6 string plus an extra string.

Try to exclude the possibility of suffering which the order of nature and the existence of free-wills involve, and you find that you have excluded life itself.

I played piano for 3 years, viola for 4, and a 6 string acoustic for about 4 months before starting with an electric seven. I highly suggest you go for it.
Only problem I've run into so far is that it is difficult to mute both the low B and E with your thumb while playing funk stuff, which forces you to find a work-a-round which is all well and good.

I play keyboards too and I love the 7-string guitar, I'd say go for it, chances are you'll pick it up in no time if you are great on piano which im assuming you are.

I don't think there is anything wrong with learning on a 7.

However, I do suggest trying to prevent yourself from getting sucked into a narrow-mindset. Even if your favorite bands are Korn and Deftones, listen to everything you can. You should listen to the variety of ways in which a 7 can be played.
