Blocking off the tremelo...
just wanted to post about what i did yesterday at school... i brought my UV in, and blocked off the tremelo with 2 extra pieces of swamp ash(1 between the screws for the spring tree thing, and 1 between the back of the trem and the body)... i never use the tremelo, so it just becomes an unnecissary hassle for me to change strings or tunings... so i blocked it off, and immediately, without even plugging it in, i could FEEL the difference... the guitars body vibrated more, each note sounded louder than before.... unfortunately i got in an accident yesterday during lunch, and went home without my guitar, but a classmate was nice enough to bring my guitar home for me(after plugging it into his amp on the way
), and i got to try it out yesterday... isolating the bridge from the rest of the guitars ground seems like it took away some of the noise i get when my monitor is on, and overall the guitar had more sustain, better sounding pinch harmonics, and it didn't have that hollow top routed sound i hate so much, it actually sounded fairly similar to my RG7421... this thing sounds phenomenal now, can't wait to get the x2n-7... on another note, i might order a set of emg's for my RG7421 so when i get back to dallas i can dick around with those a bit... figure i might want to put a set of EMG's in 1 of my guitars, just for tonal variety when i record...ps: i'd post pics if i could, but i have no camera, nor any funds to afford a camera... maybe after i get my GI Bill money i'll buy some cheapie regular cam...

Mmm, more sustain, thicker/fuller sound, better low-end. Gotta love the uselessness of a floater...oh wait...now you can't dive bomb dude!!! What are you thinking!?!? No dive bombing!?!?! Like..OMG!! The horrible sacrifices you must make to get more sustain and a full sound from your guitar! Horrible! It should be illegal. I say again, . ~006+1

Ahh, see, I'm a confirmed trem lover.
Screw dive bombing, it's all about the bar vibrato and the subtle little Lynch-y accents. ![]() I will say that, with my Tremol-no proto locked down, there is a bit of a sustain boost and a more well-defined attack to the sound of my UV. Whether that's "better" or not is of course subjective - Blazes into a Mesa on a properly set-up guitar already give me more sustain than I ever really could need, and I think the trem actually helps smooth out the high end of the bridge pickup a touch, but at the same time I REALLY like what it does to my neck pickup, especially on lower gain settings. That said, it's cool to see you this excited about a mod. ![]()

Well, I'm a Wilkinson trem lover...probably the ONLY trems I like besides the original Fender ones. The Wilkinsons do everything that a FLoyd does...only...SURPRISE! no string hassles. Also, you don't NEED a locking nut with it either. It's just as smooth, and goes just as far as a Floyd. But even still, with ANY trem, when you do unison bends, they do NOT stay in tune. I'm a picky person. Even if it was so miniscule of a degree off in tune....even if I couldn't hear it all that much, I would still know it's there and that would bug me. I make guitarists tune to a Strobostomp (strobe tuning pedal) here at the studio. They have to be PERFECT, lol.
Also, over my years I have been able to do vibrato on my own. Having to have a trem to do your vibrato is a sort of handicap if you ask me. That said, it sure is cool when Vai does it . ~006+1 |

I have always hated Floyds. I either used a Kahler for small stuff, or fixed bridges. However, a lot of this changed in the last year when I played some guitars with real Floyds, top-mounted. What a huge difference in tone, sustain, and stability. It actually made using the thing fun. Unfortunately, they don't make a long block 7-string Floyd. So, I'm up in the air about what my next guitar will have on it. I have two TOM sevens already, but I also don't want to pick up something that I'm going to wind up hating. To me, a blocked Floyd equals a complete waste of hardware and routed wood.
If Ibanez ever releases a seven with a ZR trem, then I am buying one. That bridge has everything good about the Rose and Kahler designs.
