28 5/8 inch scale seven strings

I've seen these mentioned a few times and I've seen the parts for them on the Warmoth website for a while now. I have a few questions.

What do you tune them to? Are they standard or do you drop tune them? What gauge strings are you using? I use 10s on my standard guitars.

What kind of bridges are you using? I'm a trem fan myself and have a hard time playing without one.

Is balance a pain with them? The longer scale makes it seem like balancing the guitar might be a pain.

I'm getting the itch pretty bad for one and am just doing the research now.

Thanks in advance.

You can tune standard or down. You can use tens or nines, or whatever. I would go with the next gauge lighter than what you would plan to use on standard scale for the same tuning, but it's up to you.

Balancing the trem should not be an issue as long as you use decent strings for whatever tuning you decide.

The longer scale also makes natural harmonics jump out a bit more IMO.

most XL scales are shorter than 28.5 - Ibanes does 27, Schecter does 26.5. As that's almost 2" longer that the longest scale I've personally played, I'd suggest drop-tuning it, or tuning with lighter strings than you might otherwise.

I will say, though, that the added note definition is pretty damned metal.

Oops, I totally missed where you said 28.625"

It's a little long even for extended, so I'd say double what I actually just said.

Not double that part though. You know, the last post...

I have a 30" scale fixed bridge that holds up pretty well with lots of tunings, from C# down to F#

Never played a 28 5/8, but i love my 27" scale. I tune mine down 1 step, to a using 10-68. Mine has a Lo Pro floating brige on it.. my guitar sits really nice, and balance isnt an issue. I'd say if your hands can deal with the extra scale length, do it.

You can keep the same gauge of strings you currently use, just tune down by a whole step and your technique will not change. I tune my 28 5/8" down to F# just because I always tune my standard 6s to C# and with the extra whole step on the fretboard that puts my standard 6 in B and my lowest string as the F#. Right now I'm using a standard 11-58 Ernie Ball 7-string set without any real issues at all. Email me if you have any detilaed questions on that scale. I've been using it for 2 years.

That scale length would be good for B standard, C# Standard and lower tunings.

I've been scoping these too, and thinking it might be neck heavy as well.......

Mine isn't, but that's because I designed it that way:

It's exactly the same length, headstock to strap button, as the standard S7420, I even use the same case I got with it.
