alder 7's?

was looking at the ibanez site before i decided to post this... the current universe is a basswood body... how many people have, or have played, an alder 7? and how would you describe the tone? i'll be getting an alder body blank next week, and was wondering how it might sound if i cut a RG body out of it, and used all my hardware from my RG7421 on it(including the blaze custom bridge pup, but no neck pup i think)

Mind Riot is just really niceMind Riot is just really nice
I've heard alder described as being very resonant with nice upper midrange. Not as snappy as swamp ash and not as bassy as mahogany. Many Fenders over the years have been made of it, so that may give you an idea. A bit brighter and more resonant.

I personally owned one guitar made of alder and have played a few, but never a seven. I think it's a lovely wood for guitar bodies, even if it isn't as pretty as some it has great tone. I think it would work nicely in a seven.

If you do it let us know how it turns out!

Yeah, I've always thought alder would be almost perfect for a 7- fairly deep bass (surprisingly) coupled with a great upper midrange and treble "snap"- the low notes would have lots of clarity and impact.

Never played an alder 7, but my strat sounds ungodly in B.

my Rhoads V is alder(neck thru too, but still) with a dimarzio X2N... its bassier than my basswood 7 with blaze custom, and i only tune it to D... i'm hoping when tuned to B its still just as nice...

My Wayne Custom 7 is an alder body with an AAAA maple top. It has EMG 707's and although it took me awhile to get used to them, the guitar does have nice rich tones and sustain. I'll be able to compare it to my Washburn mahogoney 7 shortly, whenever it comes in and I could fill you in with more info. As far as my 6's they're all basswood, which feel and sound lighter

Well, the problem there is EMG's tend to sound like EMG's no matter WHAT you put them in- the tonewood has a notoriously small effect on the sound of the guitar (the running joke is that a broomstick with EMG's would still sound the same, or something to that effect)

Ely- I know it's a pain in the ass, but have you considered detuning to B to see how it sounds?

Drew you have a way about you...anyhoo so I take it EMG's are not a favorite here...I was thinking of changing but they seem to sound good now...like I said when the Washburn with the Duncans come then I'll see...

Im not trying to flame anybody here, but that is simply a MYTH and a half.
You'd honestly have to have NO EAR AT ALL for guitar tone to really think that, either that or no experience in the matter and simply joining the rumor mill.

For a while I had BOTH a basswood bodied Ibanez, and Mahogany bodied ESP. Both w/ emg81's in the bridge. They were night and day from each other, the ESP, despite the EMGs, was still very very dark sounding compared to the basswood. I have to dial in a gang of extra treble to make the ESP cut the same way the ibanez did, not to mention reconfigure the rest of my amps settings.

If you dont believe it, go out try as many different EMG equiped guitars as you can, if they dont all sound the same, well then the myth just isnt true.

But yes, those of us who do not use DiMarzio, Floyd Roses, or worship Steve Vai are definitely the minority here.

(to be fair, Im guilty of 2 of those 3)

i don't worship steve vai, use a floyd rose, but i do use dimarzios especially after getting this X2N in my Rhoads, man i friggin love the X2N, awesome pup... the blaze custom is a bit lacking in the low end, at least in my basswood body, but i guess i'll find out how it is in an alder body... i'll keep u guys updated...
