By the way, I guess I'm uber-weak. I string my sevens with an .008-.038 set and a low .056 B string. Tuned down a half-step.

Are you serious? Holy crap, I thought I used the lightest strings out of this whole forum!

I just pick hard. The low E and A get the most workout in our set. I guess when I jump past the E to nail the A string, I come down too hard. It always intonates true, though, so I never worried about it much.

I guess I'm too much of a man for the string manufacturers.

Sounds to me like the A-string saddle might need to be filed a little bit. Even playing hard (and I wouldn't call you a basher by any means, having seen you play), you shouldn't break an A string unless you pretty much rip it off the neck.

I've evolved a bit. I started out on sevens with the usual .009-.054 set tuned to standard, but I prefer downtuning, and my style is more legato, with a softer picking touch. Think Holdsworth or Shawn Lane, only not as good. I get better results out of the lighter strings--plus it prevents a recurrence of carpal tunnel syndrome, which I've gotten before.

On my regular six-stringers, I use .009-.042 tuned down a whole step, and also a 27" scale Jackson DK27 with that same gauge set but tuned down 1.5 steps. That works a lot better than you think it might. There's still enough string tension, but I can get the most amazing finger vibrato with DK27 set up like that.

You don't pick any harder than I do. I think you need to switch string brands...

Oh, wait, you did.

I agree - the more Vs he buys, the more likely he is to sell me the Soloist.

Division - American metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on MySpace, and Soundclick, too.
