Seven string acoustic

I´m thinking about getting a 6 string acoustic classic nylon guitar made into a seven, Now here is the big question, what would that cost ?
And the smaller question is, how does that work ?

I'd assume it would cost a lot more than just buying a seven string acoustic.

You'd have to:

- Replace or extend the bridge
- Expand the sound hole
- Widen the neck joint to take a wider neck
- Replace the neck itself, unless you're going to try and squeeze seven strings on a 6'er's width, which would be cheaper, but play like shit.
- Replace the nut if you're going with the above.

And that's just off the top of my head.

I think he was talking about taking a classical guitar which already has a wider neck and bridge, and squeezing 7 strings onto it. I don't think it's a good idea. It'd be too narrow for 7 nylon strings, and i don't think classical guitars are built to take the kind of string tension you'd get with steel strings. Classical guitars also tend to be shorter scale.

Unless you really want a nylon string, buy an Ibanez AJ-307.

If you can find a cheap 12 string that isnt warped you could convert it really easy. Get a new nut and file the strings slots for it. Fill the plug holes on the bridge and drill 7 new ones. I did this to an old 12 string. Worked great but the neck was warped and so it didn't play good. A 12 string will have enough width on the neck and the sound hole so the conversion is not that hard.

Actually, they have a longer scale than steel string acoustics, that's why steel strings on a classical would have way to much tension. I suppose 7 nylon strings would still be playable, not sure though. Traditional Russian classical guitars are 7-string, I suppose that would be something to look into, for ideas if nothing else.

Yamaha (I think it was) make a REALLY cheap classical nylon 7-string, something like $400.

I´m thinking of taking a wide 6-string nylon and concerting it to a 7-string nylon, then downtuning it to A to help with the string tension,

"a classical has 4.9mm wide fingerboard, an ibanez 7 string has 4.7mm"

So I don't see whats the problem, it should not be to narrow but shure it´s going to be a little nifty, the guy how's helping me is a local luthier and I´m guessing that he knows how to do it, the thing is that since he is a personal friend to me it's only going to coast about 50 us dollars. since I already have a wide acoustic nylon.

the B nylon string is going to be bought in seperatly from a company that makes that so no problem at that area (just pointing this out before anybody says anything about that part )

but thanks for all the tips on the yamaha and the russian guitar.

7-string classical guitar. $285 US, brand new.

You can get one with a piezo bridge, too.

As a classical player, I would really like to get one of these.
