You could always get a Fender bass VI or a Schecter Hellcat VI and tune it BEADGB...

Yep. My Digitech GNX's produce a pretty decent single note octave effect, but forget about chords, and it's still not as clear as a bass. You get a warbling effect at times. It's neat, but not the best solution for that.

If you want to drop chords down, the only way I can think of doing it reliably would be to use something like the VG-88, where you can have a seperate effect for each string.

Yeah, I wish I could get more info on how the VG-88 handles alternate tunings - some people have said it's great, others said it sucked...annoying.
