Since I have a 7 string guitar and am tuned to A...

...whats the "proper" gauge for the 7th string in order to get tight tone?

Currently, I have a .58 as my 7th string and Earnie Ball .11s Power Slinky set on my Jackson COW7. While I am pretty satisfied with first 6 strings, 7th string keeps going out of tune nearly every time I pick hard.

Is .65 good enough for what I want to achieve? If not, what gauges to choose?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Well, i tune Drop A, and i figure it goes,

.26 .36 .46. and the next would be .56 for B, but since the B is dropped to A i went with .59, as .58 was not available from d'ddario.

You won't need that anymore. Not anymore. It's on sale at your fuckin dollar store.

.058 is a wee bit light for A. I'd start with something around a .065 and see how it feels and go from there.

Here's the current tensions you have :
Code:
len 25.5"
D    .011" PL == 15.57#
A,   .014" PL == 14.16#
F,   .018" PL == 14.74#
C,   .028" NW == 16.91#
G,,  .038" NW == 17.13#
D,,  .048" NW == 15.03#
A,,, .058" NW == 12.63#
total == 106.17#
As you can see the low A tension is really low
with a 65 it's far better:
Code:
len 25.5"
D    .011" PL == 15.57#
A,   .014" PL == 14.16#
F,   .018" PL == 14.74#
C,   .028" NW == 16.91#
G,,  .038" NW == 17.13#
D,,  .048" NW == 15.03#
A,,, .065" NW == 15.78#
total == 109.32#

I have all my guitars tuned AEADGBE and I use a 64 for the Low A.

Thanks a lot guys! Btw, since I like tight tone, would be pairing up .70 as a 7th string with Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky set (11, 15, 22, 30, 42, 54) too much for ADGCFAD tuning or not?

@Ishan: how did you calculate that

As far as I can see, trick is that all strings have similar tension?

Once again - thanks \m/

Ishan went here: String Guage and Tension Calculator - Version 0.1.4 - 26 apr 1998 I'm guessing.

The trick is to have similar or slightly increasing tensions as you go lower. If you want to follow the optimized tension rules. Of course very few commercial string sets do this. So how much you want or need to do this is really up to you.

Thanks! Also, can I use bass string as a 7th because there seems to be no strings ticker than .59 around here and shipping for my country is ridiculously expensive?

You can use bass strings if that's all you have available.
