![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Ibanez re-birth picstory (wizard content) So... Sean (OrsusMetal) wanted me to turn his 7321 into something a bit cooler. ![]() He wanted a flame maple top put on it, with matching headstock laminate, transparent black finish with 'natural binding', new active pickups in place of the 707s, a new Hipshot bridge, new nut, full re-finish (of course), fret level / crown / polish, and stain the fingerboard, and cover up that killswitch hole. Oh, also, fix that pesky loose neck.. with you know glue or something. Sure, why not. ![]() I decided I've been taking on a heavy work load around the shop and it was time for my apprentice to take on a full project. Plus, a re-model is something I've never done before. So, he rolled up his sleeves and started working his magic. ![]() The fun began when he started sanding off the truck bed liner that had been covering the guitar in the first place. We planed down the top of the guitar a good .250" and filled the comfort carve with a wedge of maple. ![]() Then we proceeded to destroy 3 of my sanding drums. ![]() ![]() We then had to chuck up the neck in the mill and plane down .200" or so to put a nice flame maple chunk on there. No paper thin veneers here, damnit. So the guitar is in it's natural state. ![]() Next step, glue together maple top and glue it on body. Then trim and sand. ![]() Finally time for the finish work. Wizard and I have little experience with natural binding, so we experimented and turned out looking pretty nice ![]() ![]() Here it is after a few days of spraying / sanding. ![]() ![]() Still have some sanding and final spraying to do, takes through the weekend to finish that. While lacquer is curing up, let's do the fret work. ![]() Okay, we're ready to set it up. Finally get the nut squared away and we're strung up... no more paper shims underneath that neck. Decided to just shim the neck pocket sides and make the neck fit in tighter, then counterbore the neck screw ferrules and set them deeper in the neck, no gluing necessary ![]() So here it is before shipping out, yes it's playfully named an Ibanez Prestige.. a move I wasn't sure about but decided I'd throw the logo on there since he wanted it. (Pickup selector not in these pictures, forgot to throw that in there before picture time) ![]() ![]() ![]() All in all, I like it. Sean was patient, it took a little longer than I wanted, but the guitar sounds better and plays better and looks better so.. win x 3. The end. ![]() |
