st2012 is a jewel in the rough
Keep in mind that although lots of people are suggesting the Schecters, they have fairly thick neck profiles. If your wanting something on the thinner side like you said, then I would look around ebay or craigslist for an Ibanez 7420 or 7620.

Also, if you would rather a guitar without the trem then an Ibby 7321 can be had for cheap leaving plenty of cash for some decent pickups.

Agile isn't any option? Features vs. Price Tag is pretty supreme in their range.

In addition to what's been said, the LTD M207 is a good value guitar if he wants a slightly thinner neck profile and a trem. If you swop the PUs out it's a great guitar.

Schecter man. Omen7 is about $299, The damien $399 (which has the passive EMG pickups/routings, which could be cool if he/she is into actives, they wont have to route).

Hey, maybe an agile

I'd say go for a schecter.

Blackjack - I personally like the look of this guitar over the Hellraiser, I also prefer the pickups. So if he likes passives its a good choice.

Hellraiser - More Gothic/Metal looking with the cross inlays, also got the emg's if he prefers actives.

007 - The older model has two splitable (or tappable whatever it is) duncan designed humbuckers (they actually sound great), so thats pretty nice for cleans and tonal variety, push pull tone pot. Also has the quilt top, and the different shape, some dont like it, I love it. I prefer the looks and the sound of the older model because it has a humbucker in the neck position instead of a single coil.

If not any of them go for a H-307, got a thinner neck. Depending on how big he is on thin necks it may or may not be a problem though, the necks shred perfectly fine though, just ask Jeff Loomis. He does have gigantic hands though .

Cheers for all the help guys, we got the guitar this evening, and I have learnt much about schecter, but have not bought one as we decided the neck may end up being too thick, and as we can't try one out, well...

That was the non-schecter option. And, I'm not saying anything, but it's now gone... Completely pristine 7620 in VK. Someone's going to be a lucky boy...
