Yeah... doesn't have to do with them being big, but with my apartment being small... If I had the room, I probably would have bought a 12-string acoustic and a 6-string bass, but I don't have room for either. I barely have room for the guitars I DO have.

My bass only had 19 frets, so I generally only played up to the 17th fret (occasianally all the way up to 19, but generally no). When I first got the bass, I oftentimes played "bass chords" (two strings with intervals of a fourth, fifth, major third, minor third, sharpened fifth, flatted fifth, etc.) way up around the 10th-17th frets on the D and G strings.

I play guitar chords on my, all 5 strings, if you strum them with a good clean sounds you can actually hear what your doing
But it works better below 12th fret.

And I want to add my sympathy for you having only 19 frets, all men need at least 24

Most bass players don't go above the 9th or 10th frets on their basses. If it's R&B or blues, they oftentimes don't go above the 5th fret.

I know, at the extendedrangebassist forum they constantly joke about most bass players never going below the third fret

There isn't anywhere near as much derision, mainly due to nu-metal just blowing over, and also because:

- SYL / Nevermore / Dream Theater / A truckload of tech death metal bands / Muse / etc -> all using 7 strings or 8 strings

- People building 8,9,10 strings etc, 7 doesn't seem like that many

- General acceptance

Seriously, compared to when i first got one when pretty much noone else had one to know, the difference is huge

I'm totally guilty of that when playing bass behing a guitar track on my music - I rarely go above the 7th fret, and unless I briefly hit an octave or something, most of my bass playing is on the bottom three strings of my five.

That said, bass played solo is actually a rather expressive solo instrument, and when I'm just screwing around on my own I find I end up doing a lot of diad/triad stuff on the upper strings all over the neck. It's a really cool sound.

Bigeeboo is a jewel in the rough
I've personally found no more need to buy one ... I had alot of thoughts about getting one ... I realised that I have no need for lower tunings that I cant achieve with my 6ers... so I just decided to stick with 6ers ... I've seen alot of people with 7's though that just chug the low strings ... at that point why not just tune the guitar lower? Its an image thing with that part I guess, 7's are fine and cool if you actually can utilise one, 8's and up? I'll just put my foot in my mouth now and say its silly, but then again ... who needs a bassist when you've got 8?

then you could ask "Why are you here?"

I LOVE GUITAR PRON :P

It's been said a lot, but that's far from beeing the main reason why 7-strings players use 7-strings guitars... In fact, that's a cliché imo. I respect your opinion, but i think you really should have tried one (for more than 10 minutes) to feel the instrument's vibe. It's common to a lot of people that play 7-strings that once you pick a sixers afterward, it feels like a toy, like it's missing something.

If i take myself as an example, the main reason why i play a seven is because it feels way more natural to me. My hands feels at home. On a 6-strings, my fingers are goin' 2 inches overboard...
I won't even get into the extended range... I'll let Drew explain since i'm more of a rhythm player!

It's rarely only about goin' chugga-chugga on the 3 low strings, you know?
