Questions about wood

hey all hows it going?

i may be getting a custom guitar done

and was wondering about wood choices

im going for a neck through body

the neck is going to be maple

i was thinking mahogany for the wings but im not sure, as all my guitars are either mahogany or basswood so im looking for something different unless mahogany turns out to be the best choice

what are some of your recommendations and what are their characteristics tonewise?

How about padauk? Great sounding wood, tight and defined with some growl to the lows.

I think every nice guitar I've owned were all mahogany bodies. Most necks too. The all mahogony guitars were very heavy. I had some maple necks both bolt and thru, some maple capped (flamed) as well. Fret boards, fret material and pups make the majority of difference. I like metal so I prefer mahogany bodies, maple necks and either ebony (African) or rosewood fret boards. In pickups, I prefer passive over active. I think the passive have more feeling. Know what style you're most likely to play and go from there. Your rig will make a big dif too (tube/solid amount and type of effects).

How Heavy is Too Heavy?

I am very rude.

I too have this itch for mahogany. I've been tinkering with the thought of a cavity mahogany body, paduk or figured koa deeply-set neck, maybe a three-part with mahogany or ebony in the centre, and ebony or wenge board.

To me nothing looks better than mahogany wings with a 5pc maple neck thru. Granted the finish is a stain of some sort. Carvin comes to mind. I owned a DC 127 once. I think I saw an Agile like that recently and KxK.
