couple of questions

1) what type of tone do these body woods get? mahogany, swamp ash, or alder?
2) which pups would be best for an h/s setup (i play metal i dont really have a sound just metal but i do like good clean tones)? if mahogany i was thinking of a JB-7 and a rio grande, muy grande single and basicly for the other 2 swap the jb for a blaze custom. any thoughts?
3) is this quilted maple or flame maple? cause it says flame but it looks like quilted.....

my girlfriend says i'm totally METAL!
balls.

how many different opinions do you want? this has all been discussed in depth by the way, in a very similar thread very recently... you're question is also incredibly open ended, as i know nothing about what style you want to play, what you are looking for in a tone, etc, your idea of best could be an absolute 180 from my idea of best...

oh yea.... well i play metal i dont really have a sound i'm going after cause i dont really want to sound like anyone in particular, just metal but i do like good clean tones too cause i will be using alot of clean guitar in my next band. i just want to know what people think and then i can decide based on thier opinions.

ephrion is on a distinguished road
Could you describe the tone you're going after? Dark, bright, tight, muddy, defined, aggressive, punchy, etc...?

that's a cool finish. i'd call it a 'quilty flame.' lol

mahogany gets a fairly dark tone, too dark, at least, for my tastes. alder is bright imo, and swamp ash seems to vary to me but is closer to alder than mahogany. i like swamp ash a lot, but you really have to try it out.

pickups are a crazy topic to debate. everyone has a different opinion. i like emg's but they won't make a single coil. i'd like to try more pickups out, particularly, bare knuckle pickups, but from my experience, i think dimarzios are more metal-sounding than duncans in general, but you could probably find exceptions. i like a brighter, fuller-range pickup, even if it means i need to roll of the tone a tiny bit.

so if i get mahogany i'd need a brighter pup like an evo7 or jb7, but how would the single sound in it though cause thats my main worry is that it will sound bad. and alder i could use a darker pup like a tone zone7 or something equivalent to even the spectrum out a bit. what would be good for swamp ash?

it's all up to you. there is no good nor bad. there is only bright and dark. single coils are generally brighter, but i'm sure there are exceptions. i think swamp ash is a good choice for single coils. my philosophy would be to figure out the wood you want first, then decide what pickups to use second. if you put too much dependence of one on the other, things get too complicated and worrysome. personally, i think the brighter the sound is, the more focused it sounds, and the better the articulation you can get, so i shy away from really dark-sounding woods like rosewood and mahogany, but it's all up to your personal preference. go to a guitar shop and be a pain in the butt. try out guitars made out of different woods and see what you like the best. take notes, too. no one cares, as long as you don't get barbeque sauce or other grease all over the guitars and don't go scratching them up. once you've decided what wood you like, go to a lumberyard or luthier or luthier supply and get what you want.

the internet is a great source of information, but no one can give you facts about your opinion.

some facts that may be helpful, though. there are different kinds of mahogany: lightweight cheap stuff and heavy expensive stuff. it may be the case with alder as well, in fact, i think there are eastern (lightweight cheap) and western (slightly heavier and more expensive) varieties of alder, but i don't know as much about it.

good luck!

thanks man, the reason i'm asking is because i'm planning out a warmoth 7 and those are the only choices i have, so i'm trying to see what would be the better choice for me depending on what people say.

what pups would sound good in swamp ash cause it seems thats the way i'm leaning now? and based on all the ones suggested, i can choose which one would sound best for me.

for a single coil, i wouldn't know where to begin, but i'd say i like the dimarzio evo7 the best out of what you mentioned. it's bright, but very full-ranged.
