Bought an Agile Interceptor for modding! Help me decide finishes etc

Yo! iv managed to snag one of the older Blue Bolt-on interceptors with a fixed bridge

Got it cheap cus of a load of scratches in the paint but as i hate blue guitars and wanted a guitar to do some modding too i figured id mod up this one

Going to do the broderick/cooley thing with the lower horn and take off most of the back of it so it doesnt rape the back of my hand when playing higher frets. plus a few other small things like that.

Was thinking a charcoal grey finish like the Agile 8 string being done here?

Wat would be the best way to do that do u guys think? my dad used to work repairing furniture for years so he can help me do it all fine but need to get the right Stain Colours first

Also i am all about EMG 707s but not sure if i wanna put them in this one yet... by yet i mean i will later on but wouldnt mind tryin some standard size passives out like some SDs or some Lundgrens. I want somethin close to the 707 sound tho but not super identical.
a lil different

Im not a huge fan of dimazio
i gotta blaze and its poor at best - altho its in a realy kinda crap ibanez

Recomendations for ways to go about staining the wood? first time modding so not 100% wat im doing altho il be able to do it fine as my dad is ganna help me with it

Also, I want a glosy finish over the top of the dark charcoal grey stainedness. Is it easy enough to just go over it after staining it with a clear gloss finish? or will the stained wood effect it in someway? stain leaking into the gloss finish or watever?

Varjo is a jewel in the rough
The stain shouldn't be a leaking problem if you let it dry well enough and use proper lacquers and stainers. If you use a water-based stainer and an alcohol-based lacquer, there souldn't any problems. Again, letting it dry enough also reduces the chances.

If you're gonna stain, have a thought about burning some stains or figures. It's pretty rare but might look good, done properly... Also, staining with a sponge might bring up some cool results. Try on some junk wood and get some ideas

Oh and one thing - when you're stripping off the old finish, be VERY careful to remove ALL of it. Not only the finish you see, since the original finish propably has some lacquer components that have been absorbed inside the wood up to some depth. You might not see it, but when you start staining it, the little patches of that old filler will pop out like mushrooms in rain since the wood won't absorb as much of the stainer as the clear parts.

Otherwise, have fun and remember to post pics!
