Plain strings beyond top three

Anyone using a plain D, or even further down?
On a 25.5" scale, I use 9.5, 12, 17, 24.. but while the 24 sounds right with the others, it's just not bendable enough. A 22 works better but has too thin tone.
So, I was thinking of using a 20 or 22 plain.
Comments on tone, tuning stability and bending ability over a 22 wrapped..?

Rgds,
van Sinn

I would never use a plain D, since I need that string for power chords. Power chords sound wimpy on plain strings.

Yeah, I do power chords on the D too. As I haven't tried it yet, I wouldn't know about a D plain tone...
So.. you did try it out..? -or oppose it per definition

I see it's been tried by more, so I take your werd for it.

Any difference in bendability with different string types, while comparing tone to a std 24?
I've used D'Addarios for years. How about their semi-polished ones, or other brands/types?

Due a hand enjury last year, I have a problem with too heavy strings. Hand mostly fine otherwise though..

I had a plain string that was tuned to D# when I used to play in C standard, and the first thing I did whenever I had one of them one was change it as soon as possible. To me, they sound absolutely terrible

In the band before Division, I played sixes in Drop-D and Drop-B. The B guitar was a 60-44-34-22p-17-13 set. A power chord on those two middle strings sounded like ass, you barely got any of the fifth in it.

I really don't miss those days, since I have since figured out that all but one of those drop-B songs could have been played on a standard tuned seven. I really didn't have to carry four guitars to gigs.

Plain strings in larger gauges are very difficult to restring, and will wear your fretas down like a buzzsaw through warm butter. I'd recommend not to do this, but it may somehow work out for you.

True, they do

I Really Like Ibanez Seven String Guitars

Origanally posted by Variant - Pulled from the river Styx, the mighty black oar of doom in hand! I certainly would not call this particular guitar an "axe" more like a club. Whereas Noodles' KxK would run through an emo, spilling his insides for a quick death, this blunt mace would bludgeon the unfortunate effeminate soul, breaking bones, bruising muscle, and causing internal bleeding to lead only to a slow, painful death

Yeah, I think plain strings past 17 ring way too much to use with power chords also. I went the other route and replaced my G with an 18 wound, I like it a lot better with 5 wound strings and the 13 and 10 plains, seemed to balance out just right and added just the right amount of tension. Im using 64,48,36,26,18 wound and 13,10 plain.

I cannot stand unwound strings over 20, they just simply do not sound good at all and go out of tune like no one's business.

I hate them so much, it actually pisses me off when I see other guitarists using them. I just feel so sorry for them.
