RG2077XL strings
Anybody here's got any idea what the thickest string is you can put on a RG2077 without having to 'route' the tuners... I know there's some huge gauge users here, that's why I'm asking... I was hesitating to buy a 0.070 yesterday, fearing it wouldn't fit...
Thanks, all! |

You can use any size you want through the tuners.
All you do is strip the top part of the string to the core (which is thick enough to support tuning up and feels like a d string. Then pull the string so that the thickest part is just at the tuning peg (but obviously can't go through as its HUGE). Next just cut the string down at the bridge end with some slack to get a wrap or 2 on. Most massive strings actually come with a smaller core protruding from the top of the string so you can tune them up anyway. Your only problem will come with the nut and the strings being so massive they "curve" over the nut instead of a nice tight corner. Hence it'll fuck your action and intonation if you dont notice it. Just give it a bit of pressure and it should flatten down and be good. The problem I had with my 2077xl and a 66 on the low B was that I couldn't set the intonation perfect. There was no room left for adjustment back. Also depending on what you tune to, the heavier guaged strings will feel very tight and have not much bend to them on that neck. I went back to a 62 on the low B with a 9 set. When I first got the guitar I put on a 10 set with the 66 on the low B. I tune to standard with drop A.

Alright guys,
thanks a bunch... I'm tuning to A standard btw. , we'll see how it turns out. Only problem was, heaviest string gauge there was in htat shop was .064. Then you could find a 0.065 or 0.070 bass string. Plus the people were getting scared of me whe I told 'm 64 was too floppy. And then suddenly, they founf an 0.068 elixir gathering dust somewhere... So I'm gonna try that one (although elixir is twice as expensive ) |

i used 11-49 (wound third) + a 60 for A standard and that has been by far my favorite set. Just my two cents tho....
Looking for an Ibanez RG970XL |

I think the max is around .070".
![]() I had a larger string on my Fernandez once, I think they use the same basic kind of tuners. The string barely came out, though. ![]() So you like heavy strings, huh? ![]() When regular nickel wound strings reach too high a tension, though, they do seem to me to start losing their tonal character and their stability. |
