PLEEEEZ tell me where you got the veneer!!! PUHLEEEEEEZ!!!!

Also, check this forum: The Guitar Refinishing and Restoration Forum :: View Forum - Guitar Finishing and Restoration

The key is fine sanding, then wet sanding (though not necessarily with water). After that, your basically polishing. I used 3M rubbing compound, then polish. Did it by hand because I didn't trust myself with a buffer. The biggest thing that I learned in the process was that I wasn't patient enough the first go around. You did an awesome job with the veneer! Take your time and don't get frustrated by the slow process.

since its natural wood, why not try Tung Oil High Gloss? I got great results on the back of my 8527s neck....

Looking for an Ibanez RG970XL

Finewoods, its in Canada, and theyr'e on ebay. Took me a long time to find a 1/42" maple flame veneer with some good figures. I got these pieces in the mail about a month ago and plan in the future to add the other pieces for an RG, ill be looking on the internet to see if i can find a good, cheap rg model with a trem. i saw one a couple of months ago already almost completly sanded, missed the chance to get it.

wanted a nice hard hard gloss, and tungoil is softer and needs several more coats, i believe. But the good news is i already have it under control, and i am neer the finish line.

Thanks for the info!! I've got a 7421 that's dying to have a maple top.

UPDATE: Yet one more for the s7420

Sanded the poly off and used some low gloss tung oil instead, the poly was just getting to thick and uneven, so to soldierkahn yeah i should of started with that, but i will have to add several coats to achieve the shine and gloss i want. maybe i should switch to high gloss, never used high gloss tung oil. Below are some pics of the first coat of tung oil and theres some work to be done to that binding, and some routing about 1/8" depth to the pup holes.
