Floyds and Graphite Nuts

Can some one please tell me how how how in the hell can a Floyd equipped guitar with a graphite nut and locking tuners stay in tune???

It seems that the nut would not have enough slide to it to let the string return to tune/tension.
I have seen carvins like this and I am amazed people say it can stay in tune
If some one could post pics or a vid would be great

And is this type of nut is more stable than a locking nut?

Origanally posted by Variant - Pulled from the river Styx, the mighty black oar of doom in hand! I certainly would not call this particular guitar an "axe" more like a club. Noodles' KxK would run through an emo, spilling his insides for a quick death, this blunt mace would bludgeon the unfortunate effeminate soul, breaking bones, and causing internal bleeding to lead only to a slow, painful death

i would NEVER use a flyod without a locking nut.

a properly cut graphite nut would be fine if you're only doing subtle vibrato effects with the bar, but for the most part, will not handle serious divebombs and pull ups. i depends entirely on what you use the trem for. but then again, Yngwie seems to be able to abuse the hell out of a vintage Fender trem with a brass nut and keep it in tune, so it's really just a case of how well it's set up.

I wouldn't worry about the ease of string movement through the nut slots, as much as I'd worry about the strings completely falling out of the nut slots during divebombs. As Edroz said, these bridges are designed for so much travel, that you really need to use the locking nut to get the most out of the bridge. Otherwise, just get a good non-locking trem and stick to subtle stuff.

Chris Broderick's, you mean.

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,

Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee

Its branches like a Temple overhead.

thats also cause the trem is an old one not one of these modern crappily made ones. And Brass doesnt rust or wear down too easily so it lubricates well. Id say that a decently cut Graphtech trem nut and a set of Schaller M6ind locking tuners should definatley stay in tune well. Check out John Petrucci's Music man guitars both dont use locking trems or locking nuts and they stay in tune perfectly well.

Remember guys its not always the guitar but the way its set up.

I agree, the JP is an excellent example of how that system can work. I do massive dive bombs with mine and it functions without any complications.

After giving my Carvin (licensed floyd + sperzels) a good setup (you really need to make sure the trem claw is adjusted correctly for equal tension on both sides of the trem) I don't have any trouble with mine. Which is to say, if I abuse it as much as my EdgePro, it returns to tune, although not as perfectly.. a few cents off here or there.

The main issue with it being really fantastic at this point is, I'm convinced, the licensed floyd. We'll see when my OFR7 gets installed...

In any event, for me, I really dig the floyd with no locknut. There's some weirdly compelling aesthetic appeal, and I've never liked the feel of a fixed bridge. I don't tend to go whammy-crazy with the DC, so it works out pretty well for me.
