Reverse inline headstock damping tape
This tip goes out to anyone with a reverse inline headstock, and cant find a dense enough foam to dampen the lowest strings.
My Fernandes Revolver 7 Baritone was having a problem with the low F# sometimes ringing out. This really didn't happen until I replaced the stock 707's with Blackout 7's (damn you Seymour Duncan and your super clear-sounding pickup technology ). The foam I used in the past for dampening and also stuffing pickup cavities just wasn't working. Especially since the low F# is an 80.I found a weatherstripping tape at Home Depot that did the trick for me. What I discovered was that most foam rubber strips are 'open cell' rubber. Sort of like what a sponge's texture looks like. But what you're going to need instead is 'closed cell' rubber. It's labeled as Marine & Automotive weatherstrip. What I eventually ended up using is 3/8" thick x 3/4" wide. It's made by MD Building Products, mfg model # 06635. Marine & Automotive Weatherstrip The best part is that it's got an adhesive backing and a smooth surface. So it won't shift around and bind up the strings when tuning. And if you need to dampen even more with some tape on top of the strings. Use something that's got a low adhesive quality (e.g. marker tape used to label scribble strips on mixing boards), and it won't tear apart the foam whenever you remove the tape. ![]() "...you can't be pure." |

Is it necessary even for standard tuning?

That's the exact same weather stripping I use! That stuff is amazing! JPMDan, I have my guitar tuned to B standard, and obviously it has a reverse headstock and I need it to help cut out ringing with short staccato parts. Each guitar is different, some need it and some don't. Having said that, every single 7 I have owned with a straight 7 headstock or 3+4 has benefitted from the foam/weather stripping.

Very cool, I'm going to have to get some of that. My Agile and my Schecter are ringing like crazy. My Decimator catches a lot of it, but there's still a little that comes through.
I'm about as cool as a fart in a space helmet.
