I would probably do 10-59 on the Hellraiser for B tuning (because it's a 26.5" scale) and 7+10-48 on the Xiphos for D tuning with a high G (because it's a 25.5" scale). I might even consider going lighter than 7 for the high G since it's still kind of a high note. Now 8 might be perfectly fine, but 7 would be much safer.

The materials used to make strings break down like this. Pure nickel is the warmest of the three, nickel steel is brighter and stainless steel is the brightest. This is only a rough guide though as things like the core size of the strings and the actual metals used play a big part.

The RG1527 feels really loose and it's very easy to bend the strings, while the RG7EXFX2 feels really really tight and it's very difficult to bend the strings. Personally I like that increase in tension and it makes light bending sound pretty cool, but I can't do the bending up 2 or 3 steps like I can on my 1527.

yeah, I ran into the same thing with my 8527/1077. but even though you cant do all the bending you could on the 1527, that longer scale just adds that something sweet to the mix, i swear, lol.

the longer scale adds tension, but it also makes you need less force to bend strings due to the increase in 'lever length' at the middle of the fretboard. Hence, you may not even notice a change in tension.

I use 11-52+8 for tuning to D standard on my 25.5" DeArmond 7-string, and using 10-59 for A standard on my 27" scale Agile 7-string. The string tension is a little stiff on the DeArmond, but I haven't broken a string yet. Also, tuning to drop C work out well, as the 52 gauge string isn't as floppy as a 48 gauge string or lower would be in this tuning. I can still bend the high G string with no problems using a 8 gauge string.

Talk to Distressed_Romeo or Metal Ken as well. They both use or have used D standard tuning on their 7's, and they can probably help you out in this subject.

The thing is that I don't like much the sound of the fat strings.

I look at it like this. Standard tuning on a 6 string is E.

So basically I'm tuning down a step to D and adding a higher string tuned to A or G right?

Is the problem that the higher string can't handle the tension?

Tuning to D is less tension than E standard and you have an extra high string really. So I'm thinking

Ernie Ball Nickel Wound .046

Tuned To D standard with top string .008 tuned to G or A ?
