If a 25.5" scale length is shorter, how can the 2nd fret, which is smaller spaced than the 1st fret, be equal to the biggest fret interval on a longer scale length instrument?

And that guy, you've missed the poit of what we are saying. A 27" scale neck has all the same intervals between the frets, but all the frets on the 25.5 move up one position. So the 2nd fret becomes the 3rd on a 27" baritone.

27" and 28.625" are the only scales lengths that fit so exactly.

Totally correct, these are often know as "the magic numbers" in the luthier world for scale length design. Particularly, 28,625" is like 2 extra frets on a standard scale. 30.325" would be 3 frets extra, and so on.

Haha, now that I read my post again it seems so stupid...apologies...I think i was thinking about the position of your left hand when fretting on different scale lengths, and then started mixing everything up

Concerning alvaros questions from the first page:

I converted to 27" almost 3 months ago, after playing for 3 years. I barely noticed it, but I also have a bass which I play sometimes, so I was somewhat used to a 34" scale aswell. I am not too well stretched and have medium sized hands, it's no problem really.

Your second question is a bit more complicated. True, you get away with thinner strings if you are going for the same tension. But due to the fact that the string is longer, it also bends more easily than on 25,5" with equal tension. This means that in order to get the same feel, you need slightly higher tension than on 25,5". These two effects cancel each other out to some degree, and the balance seems to differ from string to string: Higher strings are less sensitive to changes in scale AND changes in gauge than lower strings.

But at this point we're talking about differences you won't notice 5 minutes after swapping guitars - it's really not a big deal.

On my guitar, I am going to "extremes" in both directions: I like a really tight low end and a much softer top end, which is why I buy single strings and make my own sets, steadily increasing tension from High E to Low A. So on my 27" RG7EXFX2 the gauges go from .009 to .080, and I really like it that way.

Out of laziness, I strung one of my 25.5" guitars with the same gauges, and they work aswell. So before you decide on what strings to use when going baritone, take a set you're used to and see how you like it on the baritone.

Beware though: If you've ever doubted that going sevenstring may have been a stupid decision since there are very few models out there that may suit your taste, the choice is even slimmer when going baritone. Great way of getting rid of GAS, though!

And trust me, it's a one-way track. You won't want to go back.

Hi Lethe, thank you very much for the tips. So you say that is more possible that, if i get a baritone, replace with lighter gauges on low strings while keeping the higher ones?

EDIT: i use D'Addario .010 - .046 + .060 on a 25.5" tuned to ADGCFAD

(And sorry, Ze Kink for hijacking your thread!!)
