Good choice with Rusty Cooley mod. I think that would be better.

What are these made out of... is it alder? Pretty decent looking chunk of wood, though you can't really tell from my cell phone pics. The sanding dust comes out well though.

Hand sander... took longer than expected, but it came out well.

I have a chop saw I was going to use to cut the majority off, and then I'll use my sanders to shape it the rest of the way.

Looks nice, Tom. I would love to see it stained.

So, I'll open this post with the disclaimer that I've never refinished a non-Ibanez guitar. Maybe it's just that I'm used to paper-thin finishes, but an interesting thing happend when I went to stain the ESP. It looks like areas that were not sanded quite as much as other areas of the guitar may have still had some sealer left, and because of this the stain didn't soak in as far. As a result, you get this strange, almost burnt look on the spots where the finish actually took to the degree it was meant to. They definitely gave the surface an almost rippling look in some areas, where it's actually more or less smooth.

I was a little amazed, and a little disappointed, and was getting ready to pull the sander back out, when I thought... you know, this is really kind of unique looking.

So, my question is... what do you think? Go ahead and complete the guitar with the burnt-looking finish, or sand down further so the whole guitar is a very, very dark brown?
