Hahaha wow, I didn't think there would be so much opposition to my removal of the lower horn. If anything I would have thought the shred-extraordinaires around here would applaud it!

Anyway, I'm going to give it a shot by only doing an RC7G-style shave on the back of the horn and doing the refin first, and seeing what I think of it then. If it's still in the way at all I'll take the next step and remove it. Of course, I'll post pics in between too.

I do understand that the removed horn looks a little different, but it certainly didn't affect the tone of the last one, and I even liked how it looked. If it's any indicator of how nice it is, I talked to the guy I sold the guitar to, and he would not sell it back to me for $200 more than he paid for it. I can't explain how nice the upper fret access was... you could easily reach 24 no matter what angle you were holding the guitar at without bumping the horn. Why do you think so many shredders like V-shape guitars? You have a harder time of doing this at 90-degrees when you have a lower horn, particularly if you have a larger hands.

Yeah, they're on eBay right now. They're being replaced with a EMG 707/81-7 pair.

They weren't bad, but they weren't EMGs.

The cosmetics of the lower horn is one issue - I'm a fan of weird guitars, the more the merrier. However, that headstock is just a bad idea. Seven strings are going to put a pull of at least 100 pounds on the neck, maybe more like 120. Think of holding that guitar pointing down on the floor, headstock down, and balancing a 120-lb. girl on top. Do you think anything bad might happen?

I'd say do it, since it helps upper fret access AND it makes people here flip out!

Makes me wonder how many people must of called Vai a lunatic for wanting to route a handle in his guitar...

There are budget Parkers that dont' use either carbon reinforcement or carbon on the headstock and it works just fine. Blackmachine does the same from what I saw on the website, but i see one piece headstocks.

That headstock, if you cut it, would probably take that tension. How many individual pieces of maple is that headstock though? Whats the grain pattern like? You could have a perfectly functional headstock but gently tapping it against something could be a disaster, especially while under all the string tension.

Advice - leave the headstock alone unless you are 100% that the headstock will take that tension.
