Plus would a 24.75" scale be better for say a tuning like LowE-A-D-G-B-E-A? maybe?

cause its ibby's counter to a les paul
and thus those 2 are 7 string lp fighters, still low scale. the epi LP7's are 24.75" too

I know this isn't the tread to do this in but is their a way to make the ax7221 a longer scale? like if I bought a different neck how hard would it be? I asked this in the ibanez.com forums already and so far no one answered yet |

youd have to make sure it was all scaled out correctly. you couldnt just grab an RG neck or whatever and slam it on there
downtuning on anything less than 25.5 isnt recommended beyond maybe a 1/2 step down, step at the most. id say a low G is pushing it pretty damn hard with a 25.5 |

Like Ibznorange said, Ibanez made the AX as the equivalent to Epiphone's seven-string Les Paul.
Traditionally the Gibson Les Paul is a 24.75" scale and the Fender stratocaster is a 25.5" scale. The 24.75" scale is fine for standard six-string tuning and it is even fine for tuning it down a half step, whole step, or even a little further, but B is really pushing the limits of the scale and anything below B is just a really really bad idea. If you want to go to Ab or lower, you'd probably want something longer than a 25.5". I think A is the lowest you can go practically with a 25.5" (although some people tune lower). Quote:
The AX7221 is a damn ugly guitar and it's Ibanez's cheapest lowest end seven-string guitar. I played it once and it's basically a piece of crap. It might be okay to own if you got a really good deal on one, but if you're going to spend all the money you'd need to make it a longer scale, it would be cheaper and smarter to just buy a longer scale seven in the first place. |

Is this a packaged set, is so where are you getting them.
I've currently got D'addario 10-59 on my C7 Blackjack and these are too light for me but cannot for the life of me find a pack of strings with a useful gauge. Sorry to *slightly* bend the topic of the thread. As for what gauge would suit for your tuning experiment, I think 11-65 would be a bit light, but that just might be me, there are people here tuning RGs with 25.5 scale down A to A and using 9-56 - eek! |

ive got my loomis in GDADGBE at the moment and use a set of 11's with a 70 on top and it works great, real nice feel. Although its pretty tight i generally only play metal.. well i play blues aswell but mostley metal. so yeah its great for metal.
try a set of 10's with a low 64? |

That's a great tuning you've got there BTW. I use a similar one on my Hellraiser a hell of a lot, and it's extremely versatile.
