Do pre AANJ UNIVERSE guitars (UV7PWH, UV7BK (green/black), UV7BK (black), UV77MC and UV777GR) share the same neck profile and thickness?
I’m gasing for an old school UNIVERSE and neck thickness is my number one concern after the price ![]() And as price is important this question can be simplified to comparison between UV7BK (green/black) neck and UV7BK (black) neck. |

The PWH, GR, MC, and Green Dot are identical in profile barring any manufacturing anomalies and/or wear over time. They were all released at the same time, (GR came one year later however), and it was Ibanez's only 7 string guitar. There was no way Fujigen was going to offer different necks at that early stage in the production 7-string game.
I do not own a 97' BK so I cant comment there. Modern AANJ universes are a different guitar alltogther including the neck. |

The general concensus is everything '97 and before is great, and everything after that just wasn't as good comparatively. I'd be inclined to agree - I can't stand the new UV, but everything from the silver dot BK and before (i.e the MC, BK Green Dot, GR and PWH) are awesome. I haven't owned all of them (or any of them
) but the ones I have played have all varied. Its important to remember that all of these necks, while initially machine sawn, were actually profiled and finished by hand - every single one will be different. ![]() |

Having played the newer UVs as well as having owned a silverdot and two PWHs, I can say the necks have gotten progressively thicker. The newer (post silverdot) UVs are just not impressive at all. The silverdot I had was really nice to play. The PWHs had slightly thinner necks than the silverdot and were also amazing players

I own a GR, a MC, and two PWHs, as well as formerly owning a '97 BK.
The four original UVs I currently own all have the extremely thin neck profile although they do (as stitch mentioned) each have their own unique identity. These necks are paper thin and their fretboards feel very flat as opposed to a somewhat curved feel on my other Ibanez 7s. The '97 Silver Dot has the same shape neck and old school heel, but is a little bit thicker and I'm not sure why. Personally, I cannot stand new AANJ Universes. The old school Universes are where it's at - absolutely amazing guitars and will always be a 7 string classic - can't go wrong with that. |

This thread being for shorter time on this forum then on jemsite and received some valuable replies already (contrarily to zero response in that hole).
you all guys, you're really helpful.I just had an idea that thinner necks on older UNIVERSES may be a result of cleaning the unfinished neck. The older the guitar, the more it was played, the more times it was cleaned by sanding the neck and re-oiling it. This speculation seems at least logical and theoretically possible. I'm saying 'at least' because I never had guitar with an unfinished neck which would require sanding and re-oiling for cleaning, I have no idea really how thin that kind of neck may become because of maintenance over the years. I absolutely this place ![]() |

Just leave the neck alone - nothing wrong with a little love juice on the backside...
Here's some pics of my UV necks for ya... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As you can see, they aren't so dirty... the MC had a little bit... but you can pretty much scratch the dirt off with your fingernails... or #0000 steel wool Last edited by Eric; 12-22-2007 at 04:11 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |
