Ibanez And You

Hi, new member. Joined musicianforums.com to post on there, but I found it to be a cesspit of twelve-year-olds using the boards as a competition to post as many insults and swear-words as they can. I remember joining MXTabs Forums (which is what it was years back) and it was a welcoming place of discussion. Unfortunately, it's a spam-fest now.

My thread was based on the Ibanez brand, whom have commercialised the idea of the seven-string guitar in my opinion. They've also created the affordable seven-string, which brings me to my point. I bought a seven-string Ibanez RG7123 today, and a mighty-fine purchase it was (a measly £350; around 700 dollars).

This was as much of a "yay!" thread as it was an intro thread (I guess I'm actually qualified to post here now!) but my main point was to ask what your opinion was of Ibanez guitars. You could read all of the reviews you want (I avoid the ones by the companies trying to sell it to you) so I wanted to ask a community about it instead, who would have nothing to lose by telling me that the brand is rubbish.

The possibility is there for an upgrade if I like this to either a Universe or a K-7; I don't like Korn at the best of times, but their signature axes are apparently very good quality. What do you think? Are they worth sticking to?

Welcome!
In general I like Ibanez. They make some really good instruments. Sure, they have a few bad ones but what company doesn't?
An upgrade from a RG7321 could also include RG7620, RG7420, S7420 and RG1527.
You can find them for less money than a Universe if you don't wanna spend too much.

welcome dude, my first 7 was a 7321 too and i bought a K7 after that, and whilst i still play my RG7321 i have to say that the K7 smokes it in every possible way (obviously) it's just a fantastic looking and sounding guitar, and stupendously versatile so its a good upgrade when you get around to it.

and as for ibanez being a rubbish brand, well it depends what you play from their line up, the 7321 isnt bad at all (esp. for the cost) throw some new pickups in there and im sure you'll get along great with it

Knights that say

Ibanez = I plan on sticking with em... but first I'll upgrade my RG7321 with some better pickups/electronics.

What a Djentleman!

Thanks for the welcomes!

Yes, the seller recommended new pickups. I'm sure it helps to know what kind of music I play as well. I would say the seven-string allows me to play harmony / melody combinations, which I feel is my current weakness. I want to play things with larger scales, and branch into interpretation of classical music. I'm also heavily into Mushroomhead, and I was getting bored of downtuning my six-strings to BEADGB.

I think perhaps the Universe is excessive for my second 7-string, you're right. I'm going to take a stab at guessing that it requires a lot of getting used to (wider neck, more ranges available to you) so I need to break it in a little. That was another of the questions I had; is it almost like learning a new instrument?

I don't think so. It'll take a couple days for you to become accustomed to the 7th string... But other than that it's just another 5 notes.

Didn't try a Schecter at all, I did look at the possibility of using one though. I was just more secure with this brand, that's all.

Have you taken into account the additional chords? I'm not sure Pavarotti would have taken to you calling him an alto with bigger lungs!

But seriously now, it took me a while to make the transition between the guitars I have owned. I've found that factory settings rarely work for me, as I enjoy a much lower action and pickups that allow little difference in quality between chugging distortion and perfectly clean tones. The ones I have had offer little to work with, and thus goes against the versatile guitarist.

I didn't buy this to play the newest Korn song on the radio, I bought this because I seriously think it's going to raise my guitar playing ability to the next level. I've been playing for five years now and it doesn't take long for me to pick up a contemporary rock piece from popular culture and learn it. from the elementary stuff like Nirvana and Blink 182 to the likes of Dream Theater and Threshold. You won't become a virtuoso if you spend all of your time playing other peoples' music, that's all I'm trying to say.

I don't know where I'm going with this, I just like to make long posts it seems
