Carvin conundrum...

I've been debating ordering a DC727. Generally, here's what I want:

- birdseye mape neck, no inlays, tung oil only on back of neck
- floyd trem
- passive electronics

Beyond that, I'm not terribly picky about the rest of the options. However, I really can't stand most of the colors they offer, and I don't typically like a standard wood grain finish.

What I do think I could really get into is their bookmatched quilted maple top:

Problem is, I think that color body along with a maple neck is going to look way too monotone. Anybody ever seen that combination? I suppose I could just go the ebony fretboard route, but I've always had rosewood boards, and something completely different, especially something as cool as birdseye, is intriguing.

Ebony boards with the natural finish body and headstock look sweet. Plus ebony is totally different from rosewood in both tone and feel. Ebony is much harder than rosewood and feels smooth and sound bright with lots of clarity and punch. I love ebony boards.

Good point. I've never actually played an ebony board. And the more I think about it, with that body, I just think it would look "off" (the birdseye board that is).

I spec'd one up for giggles... I have to say, the price, for what you get and the fact that you're getting exactly what you want, is pretty amazing:

If you're not getting a maple top I'd lose the maple headstock overlay.

It would look kind of like this.

I would vote for ebony for the fingerboard. I started getting back into ebony boards again lately after having bad experiences with one in the past (bought a used Carvin DC127 that the guy never conditioned the fretboard so it was all messed up ) and as long as you take care of it you're definitely going with a solid choice. As Eric said above it has a super smooth/slick feel to it and it transmits sound quickly so your attack stays sharp which to me is a very good thing. If you're getting just a plain 727 I would vote for the ebony stylistically too as it would look really nice.

I would still be getting the maple body overlay I think, but I love how they carry the neck stripes up through the headstock. The only issue I have with that axe is the body... I'm just not a fan of basic wood stains for guitars.

BUT... assuming that neck is maple, if you got the body in maple as well, it might look better (in my eyes). Should lose that "the guitar is made out of different chunks of wood look".

EDIT: I see why you said if I wasn't getting the quilted top now. For some reason that option doesn't carry through in the ordering site.

EDIT2: Ok, fixed. The options are sometimes mutually exclusive and they don't really do a good job telling you that...

You definatly want stainless steel frets.

If you get the figured top, go with a mahogany neck. The tops are really thick, and since the bodies are so small, there's actually more tone-wood in the top then in the body wings, hence why the neck wood contributes so much to the tone.
