Reread what I wrote, dude. I think verbatem I posted "thicker strings = more compressed tone." The reaosn I think Strats, especially with maple boards, need the thicker strings is to tame the attack a bit, to still allow you to dig in and brutalize the thing without having your guitars turn into an icepick with no sustain.

Can I be a member of the light ass string brigade? I use a .008 high Eb but just ordered some .066s for me Ab.
IMO the high strings sound better when they're lighter because you get a more pronounced attack and appropriate tone up above the 15th fret, whereas the thick lower ones get a nice round, thick tone, even though I think they sound pretty shitty above 15.

on basses I perfer strings set about two sizes lighter than what tends to come with the instrument (I'll tune a 4 string set of 90-35 to D standard
). On a guitar I like everything below G to be fairly tight, but perfer to have G and higher to be on the loser side of things. This come from my playing style. I have a heavy hand for riffing, but will pick lighter and do lots of bending when I play leads/solos.

for just about 10 years i used either .54-.008 or just .38-.08
i still love these gauges, i recently bumped up to .56-.09 just because my g string was a tad buzzy and out of place sounding on recordings, but i dont understand why people think strings this small are crazy, they are so easy to play and fluid, you can bend crazy, they have so much more balls, i dont understand how anyone puts anything more than 10's on their guitar in standard, my ONLY complaint is that the strings dont sound the greatist when your recording cleans. they need to be tightened up a bit, hence, my gauge bump |

My Gibson V has a set of Gibson Nickelwound .10-.52, and damn did they just sound really good with that guitar, but their life and brightness and punchiness died out after 2 weeks.
So naturally I detuned it to B standard . And thats rediculously loose, no one I know can control it, they'll bend things ever so slightly out of tune just by fretting and it sounds like hell. And yes, I use it to play blues in B ![]() Other than that, I'm straight Elixir 9s user. Go Elixir Brigade!

I'd always played on 9s, even 8's way back when. When I took delivery of my Carvin recently, which had 10's on it, I was completely converted.
I just really liked the feel a lot more. I get a lot more feedback when picking. In terms of sound... it's less a concern for me than the feedback I get when playing. So I'm running 10-59's now, and am happy with that. I wish Elixir made a 59, because I really like the way they feel, but the 10-54 set they make I can't stand... not enough tension in the low B at all. |

It's really subjetive the tone. Sometimes you use light strings, but compressing the signal, eqing and with other random shit you can get a fat tone plus more sustain.
I preffer hard strings, they feel really tight and it's easier to riff and to solo Just my 2 cents
