i use the same on my rg5ex1 ( 10-13-18w-26-36-46)

sorry, i love wound thirds
your not the only one, and thats pretty much how i like mine, cept i'm currently using a 60 on my Low B, soon to be a 56 if the intonation fix doesn't change anything

trust me a 46 and 60 are in the same ball park for lbs. of pull on the string tension

on a 27" scale a .046 gauge string will have 19.59 lbs. of pull

on that same scale a .060 gauge string will have 19.14 lbs. of pull

i don't remember what a .056 gauge is but i think it's in the mid to high 17's for lbs. of pull

now tell me that a .056. and .046 are matched tension

you know what, FUCK tension, i'm going back to a .056 it sounds better and works amazingly well with a .046

Keep it Grim, Brutal and Troo

Demanufacture has a spectacular aura about
imo lighter strings put out a better tone and sound.
but make sure you get the right picks when you go light gauge!
you cant really use a heavy mm pick on light strings

Many people such as myself believe that string vibration is a key element to tone. When you go up in gauge, tone becomes relatively rounder, mellower and darker with decreased attack.

It's all about finding a happy medium. I love the feel of my .065 7th string, but the tone on my .060 is just obviously better. Tighter, more attack, more aggressive tone. When the strings vibrate more, that's part of how you get that 'growl'.

My bandmate's S7320 sounded amazing with the 9-42+52 he put on it originally. When he experimented with thicker gauges, all of a sudden the tone, mainly on the low B string became muddy and relatively mellow sounding.

Obviously the amp, pickups, string brand, etc play a large factor... but in general what you're discovering is no surprise to me. Dropping the gauge countless times in my life has been the solution to improved tone and response.
you've got somewhat of a point, but allow me to counter it. thicker strings=more metal=more disruption of the electromagnetic field=better sound. thicker strings also like to keep moving, sustain should be better as well. i switched from a 10-54 set on my 7 to a 10-70 set, and i finally realized why my 6 stringer used to sound better to my ears than my 7. my low strings sound much chunkier now, and pick up much better, and it just feels better to play. the 54 sounded too thin, hell the 60 sounded too thin. the 70's sound beefy as hell. my 6 runs 10-60's tuned to D, so theres plenty of tension there as as well, unlike on a 60 tuned to A...
