I've just put elixirs on my 7's in B and I used .052's instead of the d'addario .054's and they play amazingly! Dino was definitely on to something. :dino:

I can't do light.. I tend to pull my B string (A, on my guitar, technically) off of the fretboard as it is, and I use a 68. I was disgusted by the Elixers that came stock on my Carvin when I got it =x

Your ass here!

ok first post , been considering moving into the 7 string world and figured y'all would be the people to learn from.

Myself, having gone from cello to bass to guitar, light strings just feel.....rubbery, i have 14" forearms and bend my 11s up a 4th on the g, with lighter strings i just lose control, mind you i also can't make a gibson scale guitar sound like anything at all, though on a 25.5 scale i can make it sing, i don't use a pick just my nail, and finger, and i like the variance i can get out of a heavy string, there are whispers and nuaces i can't get to come out of a lighter guage...

however it's been a VERY interesting topic that was incredibly informative

Bigger strings in standard just make everything too snappy for some reason.

I'm finding my Elixir .056 a little too floppy in A tuning. Can anyone recommend a string that is maybe .058ish and coated or otherwise would last as long as and sound close enough to an Elixir?

i use a 59 in standard, and most 7 string .009 sets use a .54. Id try a 59 brightwire maybe (DR)

i like medium tension feel, but light gauge sound. i go for bright-ass strings and longer scales :P

right now, i do B standard with a regular .52 set of strings on 28" scale. sounds amazing, but doesn´t feel loose at all!

Elixirs

I noticed other have mentioned the Elixir sets 0.011-0.052 (i think). Those come with four wound and two plain gauge. Order a bulk set of 9s or 10s.
I have spent way less on strings thanks to using those sets, they feel superb in standard BEADGBE tuning on a 25.5", and I even use the same set to tune my 6er to drop C (substituting the fourth wound string with a plain gauge).

I found out Dino was using a 52 for B and A tuning AFTER discovering the Elixir fix (dangit they still don't make a 7 string set!)

great minds think a like HAAHA
