Newb checking in
I am an intermediate guitar player(almost 2 years now)...started late at age 37. I have two guitar teachers and have been doing the Metal Method guitar course on DVD by Doug Marks. I'm currently on stage 5 of 6. I try to practice not less than one hour every day, but many days I do 2 hours or more. Often I will put in 2-3 hours on Saturday and Sunday when I'm not working. I'm usually sitting up late into the nite on fridays and saturdays with a cold 6 pack of beer just playing my axe in a spare bedroom I use as my little practice/jam area. I have a laptop computer in there that I use to practice with various instructional DVD's.
I currently own an Ibanez RG 2570 Prestige with Dimarzio IBZ pups and Edge Pro trem. My main amp is the new Line 6 Spider Valve 2x12 combo(tubes). I just bought it and now I'm broke(te he!) My favorite players/bands are Dream Theater, John Petrucci, Tony MacAlpine, Eric Johnson, Planet X, and George Lynch among many others. So anyway, I have become interested in 7-strings and I curently have made up a wish list to include the Ibanez Universe as well as a Carvin DC 727 or 747 I was hoping for some advice from the members here. Is it going to be a difficult transistion from 6 to 7? What should I know first? How easy was the transition for you? Also...if you have any recommendations on instructional videos I would appreciate it. I consider myself a serious student and have an insatiable appetite for learning guitar. So I would appreciate any tips or advice related to 7 string guitars and anything else related to learning how to play them. |

![]() The transition took me all of 5 minutes. If your comfortable with a 6 then its just that easy. Ibanez have great thin necks which makes them awesome for lead and shredding. They also have great high fret access. Carvins are awesome guitars as they use whatever exotic wood you want. They are neckthrough!! and you can customize them. |

ummm, generally this goes in the introduction forum, but whatev.
you'll want to find a neck thats comfortable for the switch. ibanez is fantastic at making their 7 necks feel like their 6 necks. check out dave weiners riff of the week. other than that, i dunno. never been into instructional vids, more self taught than anything. some people look at it as a different instrument entirely. some people look at it as just 5 extra notes. i personally feel as the latter. again, welcome to the forum

Five Piece Maple/Walnut Laminated Wizard Neck I like the feel of this neck. It's thin and fast. I have played a Carvin DC 127. The neck is a bit thicker but felt fairly comfortable to me. Thanks!!! |
