So I'm pimping out the RG7421...(pics soon!)

My grandpa is a luthier, so I asked him if he could show me how to strip and repaint my RG7421. We've been working on it about two days now, and I have all the paint stripped off the front and the back and sanded each side so its ready to start spraying. Yesterday we routed out the top for binding and I sanded and took out all the rough spots in there. Today we're going to glue on the binding and start the beginning clear coats.

When its done it should be a type of burnt orange to black burst with white binding. And I think I'm going to buy a Dimarzio Tone Zone-7 for the bridge and Air Norton-7 in black/white. Should be a pretty damn sexy piece of axe by the time its done. I'll update this with pics of the progress, Im gonna take some when I go over there today and post them up when I get home tonight.

And here is what we had at the end of the day...Got a little bit of sanding to do around the binding...almost time to start the clear coats.

One interesting thing we discovered is that this isnt ALL basswood. It has either an ash or maple veneer on the top and back. I never knew that.

Bro - dont get the ToneZone 7 - its quite possibly the worst 7 string pickup made by Dimarzio.

Hmm...does Seymour Duncan make JB/59 7's in black/white?

Question: When you were sanding it, did you have to wear masks? I was talking to Adam who sanded his and said since mine was Mahogany, I would have to wear a mask...

Depends on the kind of sanding really...Like when I was using the belt sander to strip off the paint and stuff I wore a mask. If you're doing really heavy sanding I'd suggest wearing a mask. But if its smaller finishing work its not that big of a deal. But you can go ahead and wear a mask just in case.
