While I don't like basswood I don't see it being bad quality. I can totaly understand its applications (like on the RG2228, it clears up the lows nicely, even if I'd have gone with ash myself). So if the QC is good, it'll be good for what it is , a neutral wood (it's no "tone" wood for me as it don't emphasise anything).

Well, think about this, the Petrucci guitars are made of Basswood and they cost over $1000. Its all tonal preference, unless of course it is in fact a bad cut, which it probably isn't.

I'm assuming he's going to want to mass produce these rack pies, and why not? I love racks, I love pies, so put them together and you have pie covered titties. - JJ

Totally right. Sounds like a Les Paul player gave you your advice. The thing is, with a big, heavy, dense wood there is often less tone coming from the wood because the impedance of the wood is so big compared to the impedance of the strings that the body doesn't really affect the vibration of strings in any direct tonal way.

I'd take an S-series Ibanez over a Les Paul - same wood, different weights and vibrational shapes.

If all that wasn't true, why do all those strat-playing fools make such a huge fuss about the thickness of the finish from certain years?

Your RG is fine. Don't listen to the dude, he seems to be able to talk with his sphincter.

Steve Vai, Satch, Paul Gilbert and John "The Overlord" Petrucci all use basswood body's. So meh to your friend.

Well, whilst I find basswood pretty bland, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it as a tone wood. My "bland" is other people's "even" - personally I prefer alder or even swamp ash (for that added "pop").

Cheers

gizzi is on a distinguished road
swamp ash is a very light wood, but that doesnt make it a poor quality wood. its highly sought after for strat style guitars.
