Wow. Those are some seriously nice woods! Why did you opt to go for a zero fret on your newest one?
So YOU are the one that bought up some of those last Warmoth pickups! I wanted to get my hands on one of their 7-string bridge pickups, but the last one was sold just before i called! |

Wow, that is gorgeous
![]() I also like the revision to the headstock to give a straigh string path ![]() If I recall a zero fret sits in front of the nut and the strings rest on it instead of the nut to produce the open string notes. Incoming It's a surprise

Thank you all for your kind words. I wish I could take pictures that really show the depth of the figuring.
I went with a zero fret for a few reasons. First, I was tired of ruining nuts because of cutting one string slot a little too deep. Second, using a zero fret allows the lowest possible action with the minimal amount of trial and error (see reason #1). Lastly, with all the talk of using such-and-such material for a nut because it does this-and-that for your tone, well, that doesn't matter once you fret a note. I would rather have the tonal consistancy of a zero fret. @Darren, I've had those pickups for quite a while now, so, it wasn't me! Sorry to hear you didn't get them. |

Wow, top notch Rob!
The newest addition with the flame maple looks stunning! You're really making me jealous though. I'm still trying to get my shop in order to start my build. :-( I desperately need some space and more power. |

I think zero frets were frowned upon back in the day when strings binding in the nut was a fairly common issue. I think with the modern super-slippery materials available to us today, the zero fret makes a lot of sense for the reasons you mentioned. Properly crowned and dressed frets, combined with dialed-in neck relief should give the player consistent action and tone from open strings to any fretted note.
Did you do any staining to the top to enhance the figuring, or is that just the oil that's giving it that amount of depth? I really like the way you floated the pickups in the top instead of using mounting rings or direct-mounting them. It looks super-clean and classy. You're doing some very nice design and building work there! And that's some absolutely gorgeous grain on the mahogany back, too. Is that one piece, or is there a join? It's hard to tell from the pics. |

Thank you! My shop takes up half of my basement, so it's about 12' x 22'. That may sound like a lot of space, but, with 2' wide lumber racks and a 2' wide work bench, and machinery, and stairs....it doesn't leave much room to actually work. I have to move machinery around quite often. The top was first stained with red mahogany, sanded down, then three coats of vintage amber followed with three coast of tung-oil. The back is only three coats of oil. The oil really gave the mahogany depth. The pickup installation was such a pain! Due to the top's contour, the bottom ends of the pickup (where the mounting screws are located) were hitting the underside of the top! So, I cut them off and had to glue a new piece that was lower so that the pickup would come through the body. Oh, and all of the electronics were fed through the hole where the jackplate is located. I'll have to post a picture of the jackplate. Such a pain! But, I learned something so it was worthwhile. The back is two pieces. At first I was not really happy with that dark stripe, but now I'm quite fond of how it gives it character. Last edited by robanomoly; 10-22-2007 at 11:38 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |
